Hi,

I have small house in Pleasanton and we are planning to sell the house and move to Dublin or Livermore.

But we want to keep the kids in Plesanton schools (2 kids, one in PMS middle and the other one in Amador high). They have been going to Pleasanton schools for 5yrs. They do not want to move to different schools.

Can we keep them in Pleasanton schools if we sell the house and move to Dublin or Livermore?

Can we keep them in Pleasanton schools if we rent the house?

You can not legitimately keep them in Pleasanton schools if you no longer live in the district. There are workarounds that people employ to keep or get their children into more desirable school districts. You can use a neighbor's or friend's address to enroll your child. But you usually have to supply a utility bill or a copy of a lease or some other proof that you live there

You can also apply for an interdistrict transfer, which is probably the best bet in your situation. Ask Pleasanton how often they grant these, but I know in our district they are sometimes granted for situations just like yours--to allow kids to finish without moving schools. Do find out what their policy is when a child graduates from one level, though; they may not extend the transfer to the next level (e.g., your middle schooler may not be allowed to register at the high school). Be very cautious about address fraud; not sure how strict Pleasanton is about this, but districts like Berkeley, Orinda, and Piedmont have been known to have staff or private investigators follow kids to be sure they actually live where they claim to live if there is any question. It can also set up a situation where your child can't mention where he/she lives to classmates or their parents, which is pretty messy and not something I'd personally be comfortable with. People certainly do it, though, so it really just depends on your own comfort level.
