Midwest professional couple in mid40's, children grown, relocating for work. One will work in Vacaville, the other in Oakland. Live somewhere in between?
Looking for LOW crime, nice neighborhood / neighbors, scenery / aesthetics. Middle income family.
Suggestions?

Concord or Pleasant Hill seem the obvious options to me, especially if close to BART. One will drive to Vacaville, the other takes BART to Oakland. Martinez is also an option if the job in Oakland is near the Amtrak station.

If aesthetics is more important than a convenient commute (for the Oakland worker), then I think Benicia would be a good spot, but the commute cost might be too high. Fairfield gives the Oakland worker the option of taking Amtrak and a super short commute for the Vacaville worker.

If only Vacaville had an Amtrak stop.

I second Benicia. As noted, Concord, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek may also work depending on your commute and ability to use public transportation. I would also look at Hercules, Pinole, and El Sobrante. But it's hard to give advice without knowing your budget.

Vacaville will soon have an Amtrak station. It's currently under construction near the prison.

Martinez, it's a nice safe town, & it's cheaper than Walnut Creek. Not a bad drive to Vacaville and you can take BART out of North Concord to Oakland.

I went there twice on business, I found it very attractive in a low-key way, with character. Not "fancy" at all, which is nice. Some very attractive older architecture, which is rare in CA. Do a wikipedia search. Do a Google image search.

Martinez a good town, my biggest gripe about it would be the refineries. It might not bother some but it's a big reason I didn't buy a home there despite the fact that it has much better schools than Concord for around the same price. Closer to and south of Hwy 4 it's much less noticeable though.
