The word on this forum seems to be that "affordable" housing is all unsafe and unsanitary. Has anyone here found (or know anyone who's found) decent and safe housing with a housing voucher in these areas, and where? Are you miserable where you are living, or are the reports exaggerated? I've lived in run-down urban places before in sketchy areas but never had any serious problems. To some of my friends living in $500,000 suburban houses they were "unlivable". Obviously these opinions are relative. I'd just like to hear from any actual residents. I'm fairly tolerant but don't want to live in a constantly roach-ridden war zone, either. How are you living under Section 8 in these cities? Thank you.

Something has to give for something to be affordable.

My Section 8 Voucher Holders have been with me a long time... one going back to the 1980's

About 10 years ago we stopped accepting new Voucher Holders due to changes in the way HUD operates the program.

I live in Oakland and some would say everything is sketchy and for them... they are probably right... I choose to live here.

Most of my Section 8 rentals have been in Oakland, Hayward and Pittsburg...

Nice older single family homes with yards and room and yes... some are currently valued 500k+

Look for a single family home and make it your own...

The catch is only 1 in 5 new Voucher Holders was able to secure housing in Oakland in 2015...

Some of my rents would increase significantly if I were to accept Section 8 again...
