This specific case is a perfect example of how mass deportations are counterproductive and actually hurts America.

I wish Feinstein would put as much effort into trying to fix our legal immigration system instead of focusing on those who broke the rules, avoided expensive attorney fees, years of getting the run around from the government and essentially skipping the line. It's horrific to me that most of my international friends didn't get their green card until about 10 years after they started the process. I wish Democrats had sympathy for those who are trying to immigrate here the RIGHT way, the LEGAL way.

You must not have heard, if you break the law long enough it is no longer a crime.

Yawns no.

The punishment for illegal immigration is jail time and a fine and I have no problem with a fine for undocumented folks who have proven themselves to be productive and/or law abiding.

Get rid of the felons. Absolutely. We agree on that.

But let's not be dense a-holes about it. This couple is law abiding, they are both employed, she's an ICU RN, they own their home, they pay their taxes, their kid is at UC, etc.

There is NO reason not to let them stay except for this administration trying to score political points with their most hardcore xenophobe supporters.

Because it isn't fair, if you make an exception for her, then why not make an exception for X, Y, Z, T, B, G... etc. It's not right for government to pick at their discretion who to help. Fix the immigration system and this mom should have no problem coming back into the country legally and without having to wait a decade.

Life isnt fair. Why not look at each case individually and make exceptions when it's proven that person isnt a threat?

This blanket deportation no-questions-asked approach is foolish, counterintuitive, tears apart families and is quite frankly cruel.

Sen. Feinstein visits Oakland family facing deportation | abc7news.com

Interesting, the government first began trying to deport them in 2002. The proceedings dragged out for more than a decade. Since they had jobs, paid taxes and stayed out of legal trouble, the Obama administration let them stay on a year to year basis. But, the Trump administration has put a stop to that.

I disagree, you could make it in the system for people like this mother that she could get deported, apply from Mexico (or whichever country she is from) and get streamlined in less than a year to come back legally. I think we should focus more funding toward our immigration system and not let illegal immigration distract us and/or take away funding from hiring more staff to process applications and spending the time to update ways to get a visa, green card, etc.

I totally understand where youre coming from. Dont agree but see your point.

For example, I like the idea of streamlining status but we should be doing that now with the intent of kicking out felons asap and legalizing taxpaying, employed, homeowners asap.
