All but one San Francisco location of Target has reduced hours to 9 AM to 6 PM due to an uptick in thefts. The unaffected store is at Stonestown, which is in a mall and near the recently shuttered Ocean Avenue location. (No word on the motivation behind closure of the Ocean Avenue location, which was announced a while ago.)

Any bets on which chain will be next to reduce store hours and/or close locations due to rampant retail theft in San Francisco?

Yeah, it stinks. Hopefully, they solve it with the increased spotlight in past couple of weeks.

Yes. The next store filled with wimpy employees AND customers who do nothing to try to stop the thieves, even when there is only one of them like the guy on a bike. This is getting to be the Wild West and we all need to step up and ensure this behavior stops.

Yes, I know that stores tell their employees not to get in harm's way. Well, that hasn't worked very well, has it? With no one to confront them, the crime continues. Well, I am not willing to lose all our local stores, and I will fight if someone tries to push past me with their ill-gotten merchandise. There are more of us than there are of "them." We just need to step up, together.

The thieves are just going to adjust their shopping hours to coincide with the new store hours.

It’s been policy for years that employees of major retailers not confront shop lifters. In fact employees have been fired for not following that policy. Theft losses are factored into consumer pricing. Once theft cuts deeply into profits retailers move to other places with lower crime rates.

What we see here are certain parts of cities that become steal as you please free zones where petty shoplifters and larger organized theft rings have a free hand. It’s obvious that the inner cores of some cities are lawless and completely devoid of police intervention. You could call it creeping anarchy.

You have no clue what you're talking about. First and foremost, even the cops don't care about property crimes. Meaning nobody will back you up in case push comes to shove. And second, you have no idea what kind of criminal you're dealing with until they pull out a knife or a gun. And if they do and they're not afraid to use it - you'll be screwed.

What needs to happen is a law to repeal prop 47. Then city needs to allow the cops to do their job. Maybe then property crime will go down.

I really doubt it. There's no political will for it in SF. I think it's going to get a lot worse before (and if) it gets better.

The stores or insured against this sort of thing, and employees have been fired for attempting to stop it. The employee is worth way more than a bunch of deodorant. What actually has to happen is there needs to be cops going to the flea markets and busting the people that sell this stuff there. Because apparently that’s what’s happening, this is all stolen merch for peoples flea market stores.

I don't think that's a good idea. Your life is worth more than $900 worth of goods.
Get used to the idea of ordering online.

We went to the Mountain View Walmart last week because my doctor had sent a prescription there. DH wanted to find a new belt. We found the men's section was mostly locked glass cases. You want a belt, there's a sign saying you have to push a button to summon a worker to open the glass case for you. We looked at each other and walked out of the store, sans belt.

This is Walmart's solution to rampant theft. Studies have shown that if a retailer keeps ordinary goods under lock and key, sales suffer because few people want to wait around for a worker with a key. They'll go somewhere else or order online.
