Castro Valley has some very good elementary schools... I work with several people that left Castro Valley for Pleasanton when their kids were of High School age...
I guess it's all relative... I live in East Oakland, work in San Leandro and have 2 family members that are Real Estate Brokers... one Castro Valley and the other over the hill in Walnut Creek.
San Leandro will soon have a new state of the are Kaiser Hospital and has been busy building new schools after a period of selling off school property...
Piedmont is the only place I know in the East Bay where it is not uncommon for homes to receive multiple bids and overbids... top notch public schools and low crime are always a winning combination.

San Leandro closed two perfectly good high schools. Marina High is a senior center (I think). Pacific is the Nordstrom Rack shopping center. Several years after the school closure fiasco, they came back to the voters for a bond to build new schools. That was terribly unpopular. My best friend's folks still live in SL off of Davis Street.

Ultrarunner, I did not know about a new Kaiser in San Leandro! Where will it be and when is it expected to open? I am a nursing student and am finding out that nursing jobs for new grads around here are few and far between. Seeing that I live in Castro Valley, a nursing position in San Leandro would be great! FYI....If anyone's really interested to really know about San Leandro (and it's uh, colorful history of the not so distant past) check out the book/and or play by Brian Copeland "Not a Genuine Black Man"..Brilliant. The place has changed so much over the years but it's still a fantastic account of the area back in the 70's when it was white man's land.
