Hi Everyone -

I'm taking a client out to dinner in San Francisco next week, and wondered if I could get some restaurant recommendations. I'm from the east coast and have no idea where to go. He's looking for something "nice and fun" otherwise translated to "expensive but not stuff". Any thoughts? Thank you in advance!

I've never been there but every time people ask for restaurant recommendations the Slanted Door Vietnamese restaurant is inevitably recommended. I take that as a good sign. Another good bet is to check Yelp. Yelpers are notoriously picky and they do not give good reviews if they don't mean it so you can put in a certain dollar range and see the top rated restaurants. I did a Yelp search for restaurants, chose three and four dollar sign cost (at the higher end of the scale). There are a bunch of results. You can it to be more expensive, less expensive, choose some neighborhoods near your hotel, and add some other filters such as type of food (i.e. Sushi, Pizza, American, Italian).

Tadich Grill | Restaurant Review | San Francisco | Frommers.com located downtown in the financial district. The prices quoted on this site are NOT correct - more like $50 - $60.

Absinthe Brasserie & Bar

Absinthe isn't too stuffy, but it's got word-class food and service. It's on the pricey side.

And the chef is currently a contestant on Top Chef, she seems really good too.

I'll second the Slanted Door as it is so excellent, fun, on the water in the refurbished ferry building, so it's got amazing food, cool, stylish scene, NOT stuffy and a view...pretty much a slam dunk.
And it's easily accessible in the Downtown Financial District.
I've been there more than a handful of times,(including back when it was a narrow spot in the Mission) and I'm damn picky!

Although I think there are better restaurants in San Francisco, I also think the Slanted Door would be a good choice for your situation.

If you're vegan, or not. The Millenium at Hotel California. Awesome!

X2. Get the Cioppino (fish stew). Also, get there early as it gets REALLY crowded. I go there every time I am in SF on business, which is quite often.

Gary Danko would be a nice place to take your client. I've been there a couple of times and had fabulous dinners there. They are usually booked a ways in advance, but you can put your name on the waitlists as there are often cancellations (they call for confirmation a few days before the reservation and often get a few cancellations). I dined there about a month ago and was able to get a last night Saturday evening reservation (@8pm) due to a cancellation.
