Hi there,

I work in sf (UCSF) and want to live in foster city for a myriad of reasons. Can anyone out there please give me an estimate of commute times during morning hours btwn 7 and 7:30 am and also in the evening at about 5:30 to 6 pm.

Any suggestions about potential routes will also be appreciated. I am presently thinking 92-280-Juniperro serra-Laguna Honda- 7th ave.

Taking 280 instead of 101 will add 10 miles to your round trip per day. I'd take this route:

92 W - 101 N - 380 W - 280 N - 1 N / 19th Ave - right on Judah. Figure about 45 minutes; traffic will generally only be heavy between 92 and 380.

Is it likely to be heavy both during am and pm commute hours?

Yes. I used to commute from Redwood City to SFO, and it's heavy on 101 between 92 and 380 in both directions any time of the day. There's no avoiding it. You just have to grin and bear it, because 92 can be just as miserable. I've seen traffic at a standstill merging from 280 S onto 92 E, and it doesn't loosen up.

That's about a 7 mile stretch right? Do you reckon I am going to sit there for 20mins perhaps?

You don't sit, it's more of a 5-10 mph crawl.. unless there's an accident. Then you'll be sitting. But normally, yes, it would take about 20 minutes to get past the airport and onto 380.

All I'm saying is the road will be a bumpy one.

Default 92W not bad in morning

I live in Foster City, commute to Palo Alto, so I take 92 West to 280. If you leave Foster City before 7:20, you're pretty much fine; afterwords it can take 15-20 minutes to go from home to I280, but still far better than the 92/101 mess.
