Is that Chinatown? If it isn't, it's at least very close to it.

Actually I like the aestethic of 15th and Harrison much more than the Jack London Square area which despite all the changes still has a very industrial feel to it-not to mention being separated from the rest of downtown due to 880.

All in all, 15th and Harrison is really not bad at all. In fact I think its a bit quiet as artemis pointed out.

i agree aestheticlly i would rate old oaktown and 15th and harris(essex area) as tie .old oakland has some really restored urban streets while the essex area has lake merrit.my comments were based on the homicide map and and at that time i was not aware 1 of the homicides was a reporter assisinated by an organization he was investigating and the other appeares to be a crime of passion stabbing.

If it's a MA properties apt, STAY AWAY! The hood is just okay, but it isn't that walkable. There's a decent natural food store nearby, but it's not well-stocked and is pricey. Whole Foods is about 3/4 of a mile a way and lugging groceries at that distance sucks.

i often hear comments about the poor availabilty of food stores for this area, the jack london area and old oakland. i don't understand this.these areas are a few blocks from chinatown were produce, fish and other stables are readily available.it is not as pleasant as a suburban safeway and you have to be selective but the prices are reasonable.
