I heard suction-cup GPS units are illegal to put on the windshield in California. Other than the permanently-sticking dashboard mounts, is there any other way to reversibly mount a small GPS unit?

Sticking anything on the windshield is illegal except for a few things including the Fastrak pass, putting the recent sale record, or a small sticker or 2 on the lower left hand corner (like a parking pass). I don't know the specifics beyond that.

If the suction cup works on the dash, that is good, some people buy units that connect to the air vents, you can see if the suction cup works agains one of the compartments around the radio, or you can always try velcro with sticking the soft side using double sided tape or using a kit, you can buy some pretty strong velcro sometimes. I've heard of people doing this sort of thing, some people just ignore the law too.

GPS units can be mounted on the dash. An option to the permanently sticky dashboard mount is the GPS Bean Bag. If you search for "gps bean bag" you will find several dash mounted GPS holders.

Effective January 1, 2009, a GPS unit can be affixed to the windshield, pursuant to Senate Bill 1567 (SB 1567). A GPS can be affixed in the lower right (passenger side, lower corner) or in a 5 inch corner in the lower left. It is illegal affix the GPS in the center of the windshield.

You can purchase sack from Best Buy or other places online, it works for just about any GPS system.
