Hi, i was wondering what areas to look to live in if working in Palo Alto. I'd like a reasonable commute (and reasonable to me is 30 minutes or under by car)

thanks!

Do you plan to rent or buy? What is your budget?

Where in Palo Alto will you be working, and when will you start and finish work? Without knowing these things it's not possible to say what is within 30 minutes. But a generic answer would be that Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Mountain View are the obvious choices.

Either Palo Alto or Menlo Park would be good. I think Palo Alto rents are way overpriced but that obviously depends on your situation.

Last time I looked (late 2007) there were some better deals just across the creek [connected to Palo Alto via bicycle bridges] in Menlo Park: there are bunch of apartment buildings on Willow and the streets that intersect with it (such as Waverly), that gave better bang for the buck than anything I saw in Palo Alto, and are actually closer to downtown Palo Alto and Stanford than many neighborhoods of Palo Alto itself.

Some people like Mountain View but I found that the rentals were either overpriced or really dumpy. Nonetheless, I ended up living there [in an overpriced but only moderately dumpy apartment] for a year and a half because of proximity to my job at the time. I think Mountain View is highly overrated, but I might be in the minority on that.

What did you end up doing? I have the similar question on where to live with a job prospect in P.A.
