Texans still pay highest insurance rates for homeowner policies | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/030309dntexinsurance.3cf2ee2.html - broken link)

CNBC 2010 business rankings: News Headlines (http://www.cnbc.com/id/37516043/ - broken link)

Texas is ranked number 1 for business by cnbc, but it is worse than average for quality of life #29 and education #30.
compare that to colorado. business #3, quality of life #2, education #29
compare that to california. business #32, quality of life #15, education #31
compare that to oregon. business #23, quality of life #22, education #38
compare that to north carolina, business #4, quality of life #32, education #26

so texas is great for business but you are sacrificing quality of life.
since i can choose anywhere to live, i'm going to avoid texas for a better quality of life

No. 2: Dallas, Texas, America's 8 Ugliest Cities

Dallas is #2 most ugliest city. haha

No. 2: Dallas, Texas

Sorry, Texas, but quite a few of your cities made undesirable lists. Dallas was perhaps the star of the show, having been named the third least attractive, the fourth fattest, the seventh highest in ozone pollution (run for your skin!), and one of the top 10 least fit and most stressful cities in America -- by five different sources. But Dallas wasn't alone; despite being glamour girl Beyonce's hometown, Houston came in second with a tendency toward bad hair and bad teeth (according to our surveys) and even more pollution -- plus it's also pretty close to Lyle Lovett's hometown. And we won't even get into the honorable mentions: San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and El Paso.

thought id let everybody know where i choose to move.

It's DENVER.

the most important factor is which city is going to be the next silicon valley. i think it's denver. low taxes. moderate political climate. good growth. attractive to young professionals. reasonable housing prices.

i'll just have to deal with the cold and not living near an ocean.

thanks everybody.

Texas is a big place. If you narrow down to say... Austin, you have a place which is consistently rated by Forbes as one of the top places to live. I assure you (having lived in SA and ATX), you are not sacrificing QoL versus the S. Bay, as one example. You are getting a LOT more for cheaper. Culturally there is SOOOO much more going on in Austin than San Jose. Theaters, vibrant downtown & night life (6th, 4th, 2nd, SoCo, S. Lamar. Guadalupe Drag, etc.), San Jose DT is ghetto by comparison; nature (tons of green belt and trails which are actively used), Lakes, Co. River, Barton Springs Pool, festivals (sxsw, acl, fantastic fest), liberal, young; lots of tech; and did I mention a heckuva lot cheaper? I'm counting my days until I can return. The cost of living out here is madness.

You based all that on totalbeauty.com? Now there's a qualitative source! Seriously though, are you kidding? i'm no fan of Dallas, at ALL but i consistently see certain suburbs of it ranked as some of the very best in the country to live; for instance McKinney:
Best Places to Live 2010 - Top 100: City details: McKinney, TX - from MONEY Magazine

And also Keller:
Best Places to Live 2009 - Top 100: City details: Keller, TX - from MONEY Magazine

But enough of the plastic city...

Austin
#6
Kiplinger.com

Always voted great for singles:
Best Cities For Singles: #14 Austin - Forbes.com

#1 Best city for the next decade:
Kiplinger.com

#10 fittest city by forbes:
In Depth: America's 10 Fittest Cities - No. 10: Austin, Texas - Forbes.com
&
Fittest Cities: Austin, Texas : Shape.com

Interestingly enough, consistently the most sex happy city:
http://www.menshealth.com/mhlists/me...sex-austin.php

University of Texas? Top 20 in the country in virtually every program they offer (see US News rankings: Law, Education, Engineering, Health etc.) and smack dab in the middle of the city, which adds a youthful vibrancy to an already cool city.

Simply put, if you like outdoors activities (kayaking, SUPin, jogging, hiking, biking, expansive nature trails a stone throw from a large metropolitan area,), a thriving and well supported small business community, i.e. a plethora of small CoOp Organic groceries and unique cofee shops w/o the name 'starbuck' i.e. a place where chains are shunned, unique vid stores thriving in a redbox/netflix dominated country, awesome local book stores, the best local cinemas (Alamo Drafthouse) w/ delicious menus; interesting grass roots theaters and an overall weird and quirky vibe similar to Portland, "MUSIC", esp. Indie, Festivals (SXSW, ACL, Pecan St., Fantastic Fest, AFF, Fun Fun Fun, Hot Sauce, Eeyore's B-Day, Fusebox, the new BAT bridge festival etc.) mostly all in small intimate anti-corporate venues, a mega Whole Foods (flagship in Austin and makes all others look trite by comparison) w/ music, rooftop movies, free events, you name it; real centralized nighlife that makes most places in Bay area less Frisco look like a joke by comparison; an affordable cost of living where your pockebook isn't bludgeoned to death every step you take; nice affordable tract homes OR character rich neighborhoods such as Hyde Park, with crunchy hipsters/hippies/old/young/white collar/students - all encapuslated in a happening city, you will absolutely LOVE Austin. Did I mention BBQ?

The bonus is the unemployment situation is literally half of what it is in the Bay, and w/o a fat cat Gov't that is encroaches on virtually every aspect of your life to pay MORE MORE MORE, for LESS LESS LESS, all the while as the astronomical state budget deficit continues to spiral out of control. The State Gov't here is a f--kin embarrasssment, and that's putttin it midly!

Where I live now in the S. Bay is a night and day difference. DT is like a ghost town.

And that was a mouth ful! It just blows my mind that some people can be so uninformed on cities. I would never base my opinion of a place soley on stereo-type or a blog/magazine.

I have lived in Japan, Chicago, San Antonio, Austin, and now San Jose; traveled to many more, enough to form somewhat of a personal opinion based off my likes/dislikes; I am a 30 something active techie person w/ a lust for music, tech, a nice chill ambience, coffee shops w/ good local beer on tap, and cool people. Austin wins HANDS DOWN sir!

Think you should focus on cities and not states. I find it hilarious though, that you post something about high ins. rates in TX. LOL. Do you live in CA?

My boss' million dollar home in Cupertino wouldn't sell for 200k in San Antonio. I had a 2500 sqft home; 3 sides brick, bought brand new. 5 bedrooms, upgrades galore, 2 car garage, etc. I paid ~150k. My yearly comprehensive HO-B insurance was $500 a year. My HOA? $200 a year? You're lucky to find that per month here, lol. And for what? Mountains? I just don't get it.

Most people I talk to here in CA agree that this place is exorbitant and nobody really understands why (inc. my doctor!).

Nowhere near 100% humidity, actually low humidity in many parts. Where do you come up with this crapola? I grew up in midwest outside Chicago where the sweat poors off your back in mid 80s. TX, in my exp. was nothing like that. DRY heat. And yes, I prefer 100° summer hot spells where I'm mostly in the A/C during mid day; running in the cooler mornings, and socializing in the cooler evening, than the cold damp weather here.

the only bad thing is weather? thats called denial. just like texas. one more problem

Austin: very liberal and eclectic. Nary a McCain sign in any neighborhood I saw, but a crap-ton of Obama signs. Yes, the gun laws are great there wheras here you are treated like a child, good one. Bad immigration problems? As opposed to S. California? lol. Higest rate of uninsured health care population? Maybe because people in the boonies can afford to see a doctor w/o taking out a small mortagage... I really have no idea on that one, but how is that bad if you have good ins. and you're not supporting an out of control budget deficit via your taxes? I'm all for socialized healthcare btw, but that's neither here no there.

Christ, I can't wait to move back. Going to enjoy my time here to the fullest and hit every state park/landmark that I can, but this cost of living is for the birds, and the grass is greener on the other side! I don't plan on spending the rest of my life paying for the mistakes of greedy politicians SoBs in a state where high-priced theft & corruption continue to flourish (see Bell, CA for insight, I'm sure they aren't alone). If local Gov't was paid based on productivity here, they'd all make minimum wage.
