I think you would love Austin, Texas. It's a sort of sister city to the Valley because of all the technology jobs centered there (including Dell) and UT Austin. The landscape is hilly and green with lots of trees. The prevailing ethos is extremely liberal ("the people's republic of Austin." Totally different than the rest of Texas, I'm told. It's extremely affordable by CA standards, although the best school districts are less so - but even in the Eanes district, which is a Blue Ribbon School District and nationally ranked (like Paio Alto schools) you'd be able to find a 2+ acres for 800k, be within a 15 minute drive of downtown and all the amenities.

Hi, I moved from the Bay Area to Charlotte NC. Actually I live in Lake Wylie SC which is right over the border. I lived in California for 30 years and I am so happy I left. I did own property there, but got divorced and rented before I left. I worked for the City of Palo for 25+ years and I had a wonderful job, but retiring on my single pension, I had to move away. I love this area I live in and the school district is on tops. Check out the area & let me know what you think.
