My wife just got a job at Stanford and I a job in Menlo Park, I am originally from the UK and don't know anywhere south of the city, I have looked at maps and possible locations look like:

Redwood City,
Palo Alto,
Menlo Park,
Mountain View,
Los Altos,

I have also heard that going further north to Burlingame or south to Sunnyvale are nice.

What do you guys think about the above areas, in particular what parts to avoid, and if you know the average rental for these locations i would be greatly thankful!

Thanks in advance!

They're all mostly great areas. They're all expensive compared to the national average housing/rental costs.

Can you maybe be a bit more specific with your questions? There are hundreds of threads discussing life on the Peninsula from every conceivable angle - what specifically do you want to know?

Redwood City for apartment rentals is cheaper than points south by about $200/month. In Sunnvyale/MountainView you're looking at $1900-$2000/month for 900 sq foot 2 bedroom apartment. Subtract $200 off that for Redwood city
