Santa Cruz isn't as nearly as hippie dippie as it used to be... I mean a lot of that remains, but even a lot of the college students seem more focused and serious than they used to be back in the 70s and 80s. There's a much more upscale segment in Santa Cruz--and more so in suburbs like Capitola and Aptos or Soquel. The Silicon Valley influence brought in a much more new money crowd in the last 15 years. There's still a scraglly old school surf/hippy element, but that's more in certain parts of Santa Cruz proper these days.

As far as golf goes--Pasatiempo is a great course and Seascape isn't bad. Of course nothing compares to playing some of the courses down to the south on the Monterrey Peninsula--if you can afford it.

I guess a lot of that has to do with the prevailing high costs of living in the area - which has priced out a lot of the so-called counterculture.

Well that's a shame. Hard to beat a slightly hippie dippie in a short tennis skirt.

There is absolutely no way that I would live in Santa Cruz. It is full of a bunch of stoned 60's type hippies. I worked in Santa Cruz and lived in Los Gatos. Los Gatos was great and would be affordable for a single person mking $80K. My wife and I lived right downtown in Los Gatos and could walk to everything. The commute isn't too bad as you are going against the traffic.

Eh, they haven't been able to afford to live there for a long time now.

I will have to check it out when we go up to Monterey in April to visit our son and family. It was a few years ago when I worked for Cisco in Santa Cruz. We will take our grandkids to the Boardwalk, get some ice cream on the pier. and eat some Mexican Food downtown.

Oh man, what I wouldn't give for a fresh shrimp cocktail right about now.

You'll see a few vagabonds and trustafarians along Pacific Ave., but pretty much the same old transitory West Coast hippie-hobo circuit people that are always making the rounds, coming and going.

I agree, probably wouldn't live in Santa Cruz either. Although it could be interesting for awhile. Just 30-45 mins from SJ but it's like a whole other world over there.

I'd recommend Campbell over LG for a young single person. There's more young people in Campbell and its quite a bit cheaper. Some nightlife in both, neither is very good but you can get to dtown LG from dtown Campbell in 15 minutes. Campbell has more amenities close-by also and I've been a strong advocate of the area of town between San Tomas Expwy and San Tomas Aquino. Has it's own shopping centers there (with a nob hill) and you're just a hop and a skip from Westgate. Also, the downtown area of Campbell has a fair amount of apt. choices and I've seen cute girls at that Safeway on Winchester.
