Heading to Santa Cruz this weekend (thursday afternoon) and I am wondering which way will be the fastest/easiest? I will probably leave Tracy around 3PM. My options are to go out to Dublin and then down the 680-880 through San Jose, or to take the 5 south to Los Banos and then head west at San Luis Reservoir. Obviously the second option will have less traffic, but will it be worth the extra ~40 minutes? In other words, will the traffic going the San Jose way delay me 40 minutes or more to make the I-5 way faster?

I'd be tempted to go with the I-5 to Los Banos option. Of course, 152 can really be bad at times ... but 580, then 680, then 280, then 17? ... lots of opportunities for problems there.

you will probably have smooth sailing on 205, 580 and 84 but once you get to Fremont on 680 the traffic might start to suck because it will be about 4 by then and commuter traffic will start so you are probably looking at like 1.5 hours from there.

Disagree with the above, as you are going against the traffic flow. The best way to go will be 680 until it passes 101 and turns into 280, keep going through downtown SJ, and merge onto south 17. Don't use Mission to cross to 880. Trust me, I drive that stretch all the time and it's nasty on getaway weekends.

I should add that yes, 17 is going to be horrific. If you're lucky it will only be from Hamilton to Hwy 9, but it could stay slow all the way to the summit. Will it waste more time than going all the way around on I-5? I highly doubt it.

I agree. It is true that the 205-580-680/880-17 route is a nightmare in traffic. Given that 152 goes to Gilroy and Watsonville, you would still have to take 1 from there to get to Santa Cruz, which would cause in furthur delay.
