Has Downtown San Jose changed a lot since 2007? What are the biggest changes downtown has seen since 2007? The former Redevelopment Agency had pictures of dramatic change of Downtown San Jose from 1975 to 2007.

Physically it doesn't look that different, except near San Pedro Square. There are many more restaurants, and businesses than back then. There have been 6 residential high rises built downtown since then, though I think City Heights started selling in 2007. Axis and Centerra have replaced low rises near San Pedro Square, San Pedro Square Market added a lot of food vendors there. The parking lot just north of that was torn apart for new construction that is still ongoing. There are a few more buildings torn down for construction nearby. The empty lot by 87 and Santa Clara has a hotel under construction. Area near city hall also has a bunch of construction with Dinner Lofts and 26 N. Sixth St, but those are still being built. And there is the new courthouse by St. James Park.

The 6 new buildings probably added a lot blog new residents right by the main core.

There are currently a lot of proposals so if the economy keeps up we will see a lot more changes the next 5 years, but many may not go through if the economy stalls.

I lived in San Jose up until the mid 2000's and still go back a few times a year. I haven't really had too many opportunities to check out down town, but everytime I do get a chance it is just a little bit different. This time I noticed a new Safeway between San Pedro square and the Cesar Chavez Park(?where they do christmas in the park). New restaurants, couple of new buildings. Seems like more people out and about too. I would say it definitely looks different than 2007, but I wouldn't say dramatically. Dramatic change would be like 1999 compared with now.

San Jose is still not a city but rather a giant suburb. I have not seen that basic fact change in any significant way during my nearly two decades in the area.

San Jose is a true urban center and very urban in the core with suburban feature in the outer area. It's a urban/suburban city with a real downtown core.
