I am considering moving to Scotts Valley. I work remotely so I don't have to worry about commute. But one of my coworkers said he used to live in the redwoods/mountains surrounding Santa Cruz (he didn't specify where), and he said that drugs were a big concern there. He said he had neighbors who were running meth labs, and that people were generally sketchy.

If this is true, would Scotts Valley be one of those areas where drug operations would be a concern? Safety is a top priority for me.

What do the crime demographics tell you?

Scotts Valley is known for being a safe community.

Look at crime stats.

Scotts Valley is known as a family-oriented community, and also an outpost of Silicon Valley commuters. There are a number of small communities in the Santa Cruz Mountains; it could be any one of those, but generally, it's an area of fairly wealthy residents. The RE is pricey, like much of coastal CA RE. There could be pockets of low-income folks scattered around, though. I would tend to suspect maybe outskirts of the much smaller communities, like Felton, for that.

I don't think there are very many meth labs anywhere in the US, the meth all comes from Mexico, it's dirt cheap so there is no longer any advantage to risk running a meth lab. Scotts Valley is a lovely place to live, my aunt used to own property there.
