Downtown Oakland is a strange and wonderful beast. Whenever I walk around the Broadway, Telegraph, Webster kind of area, I see the most amazing tricked-out cars. I'll never forget the bright pink and green Lexus SC400 blasting Janet Jackson like she was there singing on the street. Lots of great Gothic architecture. It's like you dropped a little bit of St. Louis City into California.

There are lot's of 20-somethings in the Tri-Valley area (Pleasanton/Dublin/Livermore) so maybe you should stick close to work at first until you get a feel for where the folks you mesh with are going for fun and excitement...
then move there.

Walnut Creek sounds like your best bet but it can be pricy if you want to be near downtown.

Hayward might not be a bad idea for you as well. There's nothing in Hayward (they have a few cool places downtown, but not much) - but the point is that it's a relatively easy drive to Oakland, San Jose, San Francisco, and even downtown Palo Alto. I've never looked at Hayward, but it might be fairly inexpensive (for the Bay Area).

The semi-gritty edge of "Rockiscal" ... that's the ticket.

Y'know, you're absolutely right. Rockridge would be perfect.

Sweet. Rockridge sounds like a good idea, and I've already started looking for a place out there. Thanks again everyone for some great advice!

If I were you, I would move to an apartment in downtown Walnut Creek (with a roommate on 45k) if you have a car. You can enjoy the bar/restaurant scene in WC during the week, drive to Pleasanton in 25 min, and party in SF (30 min BART ride), Berkeley or Oakland...all accessible by BART. The last train leaves SF at close to 1AM, but SF isn't a late night town like NYC. Everything there closes early.
