Hi,

I am a 23 year old, straight, single, female who is being relocated to work in San Jose for a corporate job. I graduated college a couple years ago, but am sick of the constant drunk, college party life and want to meet and be around other young professionals.

If my job is in downtown San Jose, do you have any suggestions on where the best places to live are? Preferrably not too expensive, definitely looking to stay around or under $700 - $800 a month (if possible).

Also, any suggestions on fun places to go out and meet people? Any stand-out sort of young professional groups, volunteering groups, dance clubs/bars not infiltrated with college kids, etc.?

Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, your budget is absolutely going to limit you to renting a room only. There are only a handful of apartments that price in San Jose and they're definitely not a pretty sight. In 2006 I rented a master suite out of a house in a quiet part of Milpitas which had no public transit (which is just as well because you will wind up driving everywhere), and that was $700 + utilities.

My advice to you would be to browse the roommate listings on Craigslist and look for people who are in the same boat as you. They may be new to the area and ready to explore with you, or they could be already established and know where to turn. On your budget, you're not going to have an alternative, so you may as well make the most of it. Good luck.

Your price range limits you to the sharing of living experiance which can be extreamely pleasant or horribly detestable, depending on your frame of mind, but, i know since your willing to listine, your capable of being fluid and adjusting to the new challenges presented to you.

Here's a post I recently read about downtown SJ. It's about safe areas, fun places to go, etc. The poster is bobby_guz_man. He posts a lot about SJ and you can do an advanced search and put in his user name and read all his posts.

Pay attention to which areas he says are not safe. That is where you'll find the Craigslist apts that look affordable, unfortunately (in SJ).

I live in Santa Clara by the university. It's a safe area and really close to downtown SJ. Just a quick drive down The Alameda.

I rent small studios (250 sq ft) for $1090 incl utilities (right next to university). In this area, that's what a master bedroom will cost you in a roommate situation, so even though they're really tiny, I have no problem renting them at that price. So, my point is, you're going to have to up your budget if you want to live alone and be safe.

I think you'll love it here. Great weather, lots to do, 30 mins from the beach, just a few hours to skiing. Of course, that's why it's expensive :-)

EDIT: I just did a Craigslist search for studios in Santa Clara, and you can find more affordable ones at the other end of Santa Clara, which also has a Caltrain station, so you could drive a little further, or possibly take Caltrain to downtown SJ. There's a Caltrain station next to the university, by where I live, too.

The thread you just resurrected is over 3 years old. I doubt the OP is still looking.
