Hi everyone, just wanted to say that I have been prowling around on this site for months and it has been so helpful in moving out here to the Bay area from Chicago.

My question is this: I'm a resident physician who has a 2 year contract with a hospital here in the bay area and I am required to have a CA drivers licence in order to practice here. But the car that I drive is owned by my father in Chicago and has IL plates. So if I get a CA drivers licence do I have to get CA plates even though I don't own the vehicle? Or can I just get the CA licence and keep the IL plates?

Thanks

I won't be much help but i'm wondering if you can get away with that.
I'm thinking that after a certain period of time (6 months?) you'll have to register that car in California.
Using the out of state college student as an example ... could he/she drive the parents out of state car for their years in school? I'm doubting that.
I was trying to find an answer on the DMV site but no luck with that.

Yeah I looked all over the DMV website for an answer but couldn't find any. I even called the DMV but they kept telling me the wait time to speak to someone was 10 mins despite being on hold for 35 minutes. So if anyone knows or has experience with this it would be really helpful.

I did find this page (although i guess you probably did too) ... seems like somewhere on it should be an answer as it's gotta be very a common issue.
