in the South Bay? Is there some other hidden gem around for house rentals?

I am not a supporter of Craigslist as many know, but it is, at least a good place to get started. If the ad looks too good, it probably isn't legit.

Agree with Nita.

You're going to receive 5 attempted scam e-mails from CL users.

But there are honest people who are posting because it's free. I'd try that and classifieds from local newspapers to start.

It's probably different in San Jose etc. because of a larger population but scams in Santa Cruz county are flagged and removed very quickly.
I can spot them in an instant ... they're usually very obvious ... at least where i am but again, it would be different in larger cities.
If one is familiar with rental prices, it's often the ads that look too good to be true that are suspicious.
I don't know why you're not a "fan" Nita ... it's the best on-line source by far (and superior to papers especially because many people aren't in the locale where they need the housing) and as long as people use common sense and don't give money and/or financial information without first ascertaining that the person one is dealing with is legit, there's no reason to have an aversion to Craigslist.
Maybe you don't like it 'cause of some of the other "unsavory" classifieds? but that's irrelevant to the rental scene and when one is in need of housing it's an excellent tool / resource.

Yes it is the best source. If you use a realtor, then you'll be limited to the pool of real estate that is being listed with that specific brokerage - and they often just repost on Craigslist anyway. It has its hazards but I've had good luck, and I doubt very much that I could have gotten the same results without it.

Thank you everyone. I guess I was just hoping there was a hidden classified out there for the area since I'm not finding much of what I want on CL. LOL. I guess it's just not existing...yet.
