Need some advice from locals on this one! We just bought a home in Venice, have city water, BUT am getting what looks like rust stains on my white clothes when washed. Does city water cause this? Also, the water seems to be very harsh on the clothes, making them look worn quickly. Is there something I am supposed to be doing to avoid this?
Thanks for any help!
Summer

The water is not great down there and what you describe sounds like sulphur content which I might expect from well water but not city water. However everyone seems to have a water conditioner down there. Do you?

I am up in Sarasota on county water but before I got rid of the old washer and dryer set when I moved into my home, my whites were coming out with rustsspots. When I bought my new set with steel drums, never had a problem again. Could it perhaps be the washer or dryer? I was able to find a rust spot remover for fabrics at Bed Bath Beyond...worked great. Brown bottle, can't rememeber the name.

Do you have VANISH in florida. (VANISH Trust Pink, Forget Stains. (http://www.vanish.co.uk/faq.shtml - broken link))
It may have a different name in US.

I had similar problem, rust spots on clothes and they never looked very white. I just put some of this in the wash with the detergent and it really makes a difference.

would check your water hose connections in the washer--they can corrode

if you have a filtration system--does the filter need to be cleaned or replaced periodically--
I don't have one so don't know

Sounds like what used to happen when I was on well water. The whites get a yellowish tinge to them. Lemon is supposed to help with that, but there is also an additive you can put in with you washing soap. They are usually available in the laundry aisle at the grocery store.

oxyfresh has been good for me when I have had stains--even old, old ones--on things like baby clothes stored away or family linens--like embroidered pillowcases my grandmother did...

I would soak them in cold water with the powdered form--sometimes for several days--but had really good results...

Wow! Thanks to all for the great suggestions! I did notice that that when I took towels out of the washer, there was rust on the little hole indentations left from the rinse cycle. So, like Angelfish said, I suspect it is from the washer. Am definitely going to try Oxyfresh and the rust remover from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but think I need a new washer to solve the problem.

if your washer is in good enough shape and you have some handy with tools it might be possible to just replace the drum--vs the entire washer
don't know if you want to go that route but it might be pretty simple
why don't you Google it

yep the water in florida is sulphur water or if you have city water they put alot of chemicals in the water and it makes your clothes look dingy quick and I got rid of alot of my clothes when I lived down there simply because they were so dingy you could not wear them in good conscience anymore so out to the garbage they went . I think you will find you are going to go through some washers while living there as well . I went through 2 in ten years and here in the midwest which is not so great either but much better on clothes , I have had one for 4 yrs and it is still going strong . Good luck with the washer and remember to watch for the chemicals in the water .
