I think I was in New Haven once, for a Dali exhibit. Didn't eat while we were there though. Hours in line for pizza huh? conveniently in NYC & LI I never wait more than 5 min, that must be some life-changing pizza you got up there!! If I am ever in New Haven again I will give it a try
You should. Pepe's, Sally's, Modern are all institutions. The scene is small, but very well respected nationally. You might not have had friends say so, but believe me, many hop on Metro North to New Haven for the pies.

And yes, the lines do go down the block sometimes. It's almost like a tailgate party sometimes with people bringing beer etc. LOL

Here, check out the "scene" for yourself.

New Haven Pizza, Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana, Modern Apizza, Sally's Apizza

Would SW Florida patronize a REAL Neopolitan, coal oven, charred crust pizza establishment? Or is everyone so tainted by the likes of Domino's, Hungry Howies, CiCi'c etc that they would turn their nose up at real pizza? Hmmm.

ETA: If you do visit, it's "apizza" said "Abeets" - think broken English accent "I maka da abeetsa". It's okay if people from NY call it "A Pizza" though.

Obviously, it's NYC or North Jersey for pizza, but as you head further up 95 into CT, you have access to langostino sandwiches, which almost makes up for the pizza degradation the further north you go.

Their wedges (see: "sub," "hoagie," etc.) are also a cut above.

Lastly, I always found that the amazing NY deli phenomenon (read: "Jewish deli") stretches more north than south, into Westchester and Fairfield counties. Some of the best sandwiches I ever had outside of Manhattan were in Stamford, of all places. They also manage to truck in the Arthur Avenue Bread. If you know, you know what I'm talking about.

Are you trying to say you like our "grinders" (The birthplace of the "sub, hoagie, wedge, hero etc") almost as much as you like our pizza?

There is still some great Jewish deli in SE Florida, but nothing like it used to be.

I grew up in North Jersey and in Connecticut, for the most part.

I agree the "subs" are very good, but they're not nearly as obviously superior as the pizza.

I grew up in NJ and basically live on pizza. I currently live in Myrtle Beach (and write reviews of area NYC style pizza places for a Myrtle Beach Discussion website), but am planning on moving to Sarasota in 2012.

In the Sarasota area I've only tried a couple pizza places so far, but I would highly recommend Mamma Marias Pizza in Venice on Tamiami. Definitely worth the 20 minute drive.

One place I'd avoid is the pizza at Valentinos. They make great Italian bread and a decent baked ziti, but the sauce they use for the pizza will make you hurl.

well, after the initial culture shock and getting used to not having a good pizza parlor up the block or anywhere within a 20 min drive I've found we just don't eat pizza. Oh well. I don't really miss it. Everytime I go back to NY and think I'm gonna glom on pizza and eggplant parm heros i am dissapointed and like "why was I so crazy about all this my whole life?" I think it was part of the lifestyle. You drove past the places all the time - it was easy, quick and cheap. With it out of the culture and my daily routine I just don't really think about it any more.

I am happy that I can get a decent gyro though.

Default Pepe's

I have to say the DH are pizza guru's,and by far and we have tried alot, the most outstanding would be Pepe's
yes we have gone to the original and waited in line, but they have franchised into about 6 places now including Yonker's ,N.Y., there is on in Mohegan Sun casino also, but the one that is the closest to us is in Manchester ,Ct. about 20 minutes away, and we go at least once a month...
thin crispy crust and the sauce and toppings are the bomb!!!
we have tried a few places in florida
thats all I have to say on the subject

The Hawiian pizza makes the Greek pizza look like elevated fine dining.
