I guess my dream is shattered moving to swfl...what is there a need for in this aresa of florida that isn't being met? Id like to perform my own business if I could think of something...what about shuttling senoir citizens around?

most of the seniors I have see in FL have been behind the wheels of their own cars, unfortunately...
do you really think you could make enough money to support a 5 person household by driving seniors to the store and their doctors' appts--your cost per mile would be pretty expensive it seems to me

there ARE lots of medical facilities around here--if you know about medical billing you might be able to get a job--but you would have to be trained to do that
what what I read/see most jobs on gulf coast are for medical-related fields which would require retraining and would put you in competition with younger people
financial services fields--trying to sell insurance/stocks/bonds/investments to people with money (like seniors who retire here from other areas)
the tourist service industry--food service/hotel/motel/retail sales--which is seasonal and poorly paid
and some companies that mfg for the military

I'll tell you the same thing that we tell all of our friends that want to move down here. The state is not all that diverse from a job-perspective. At least not what we're used to up north. So, if you can't find something in your current field, (or can't think of a good business to start) retrain! There are numerous medical fields that only require an associates degree and can pay $25+/hr easily. In fact, a good friend of ours has 20 yrs in IT and is retraining up north for a medical profession so he and his family can move down here in 2 years. It's a small investment of time and money that would have lifelong benefits and get you to your "paradise". Good luck!

Hate to burst your bouble re: retraining for medical billing but it's "he & everybody else..." Not sure on the $25/hr easily remark either. Check your facts on this one! Many of the advertised jobs that are over $15 an hour are part time only/no benefits.

very true. those fringe medical jobs that require an associates or less have become so oversaturated with applicants as everyone has retrained for them over the past 5 years, especially in florida. its become what IT became in the early 2000s.

Lady, I NEVER once said ANYTHING about medical billing. Please read better before responding. I would NEVER recommend that field to anyone. And yes, I know a lot about the medical field (my wife has been in it for 12 yrs), and it is a fact that there are several occupations in the med field that, like I said, only require an associates degree and can pay over $25/hr. These are facts/reality, please don't question me on them. I know what I am talking about.

Wasn't referring to any "fringe" medical jobs. These professional positions (inpatient and outpatient) are not found on a TV commercial or in any newspaper. They are mostly in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and retirement homes, but some do traveling from location to location. We have a friend that spends 6 months in Sarasota making $35/hr (plus free housing), then in April goes back up north and makes roughly the same. She's been doing this for 4 years now and loves it (not married/no kids).

No worries, I must have been confused; however, your friend got in four years ago. Job picture is totally different now. I will still tell anyone don't come down here thinking you're not going to face STIFF competition, medical or otherwise. Having your RN/LPN & experience is one thing; fresh out of school with everyone else is another. Traveling nurses have always made good money.

A guy in Punta Gorda, opened a small store, and began importing and roasting coffee. He goes to different farmers markets every weekend and sells fresh roasted coffee, and hot coffee to drink. He really knows how to best roast each type of coffee he supplies. His business has tripled in one year. He has a side business, but is considering giving that up, or letting his brother run that while he focuses on his growth. He has taken over stores on each side of him and expanded - so his floor space has tripled.

I don't know where you're thinking of living, but you might want to consider doing that. It is not that expensive to get started, just pick out a good location and the more foot traffic the better.

And, if you did something like that, your wife could probably help - if she wants too. Some of the work can be done on flexible hours, but the store would need to be attended.

Just a thought, although you could probably do something different and be successful. The key is just doing it. Fear of doing anything is always the most common impediment to success.

Well said Big House! If you want something bad enough sometimes you just have to jump in and give it a try. Some of our most successful businesses have been started by people that had little more than a dream and dedication to start with.
