As far as the British tourists, there is no legal legitimate reason to be in Newtown at 3am. I know even drunk, I would know I was in a bad area immediately, the place is run down as HELL. These men weren't on the edge of Newtown, they were quite a ways in, at an apartment development. Yet people still say they can't imagine why they were there.
Brilliant.

Brits like to walk...everywhere..especially home after going on a bender. They were lost, please don't put suspicion on the victims. The guy shot them in cold blood, he was a monster.

He most certainly WAS a monster. That said, I stand by my statement, when you go into what is visably obvious a bad neighborhood at 3 in the morning, you are up to no good. You can reasonably expect something tragic to occur.
I've been to England. There are dangerous neighborhoods there too. The same reasoning applies there, so don't tell me that the fact that they are British, means they don't know better, that is untrue.
I know the young man who dropped them off, he is not known to make things up. He advised them not to go, but they did not take the advice. They were looking to buy cocaine, they were very clear to him about it. I'm sorry this happened, I'm glad justice was served, but you can't go to the ghetto looking for drugs, & expect a good outcome. You also can't be naieve enough to think that because these men were white British tourists, they could not have been in the ghetto at 3 in the morning unless it was an innocent reason. Wake up.

Can we stop calling these people by their first names, as if they were our cousins or something? It's goofy.

Meanwhile, I don't think I have ever heard a more untrue statement than the following:

"One thing I do know is, no one sober throws the first punch without provocation."

Wow. I mean, no offense, but this is a serious credibility-killer. In the real world of primitive humans (we are still primates, right?), people throw the first punch without any provocation whatsoever. Sound crazy?

Sure, but so does a lot of other true stuff.

Sarasota has changed so much post Interstate. It was never a high employment area. The drug culture and the attitude towards others has changed Sarasota. You need to be armed always there now.

The topic of this thread is Trayvon Martin? Oops my bad, thought it was about Sarasota crime.........

ME: With the guns laws in Florida being as they are, ( in my opinion, great) I would think crime would be more isolated to areas where you actually need to "look for it". Is that accurate?

YOU: Criminals do get shot here. They get killed as well. I am sure you've heard about the Trayvon Martin case, though he was no criminal.
Your question is no more related to the thread than my statement.
Both are regarding crime in Florida. You're flailing.

Is that regarding Sarasota as a whole, or only the hoods? Is it generally safe to go though the city, off the tourist traps? Are there many stories of people using their concealed weapons to ward of attacks or robberies in the general area? Are home invasions in the " bedroom" communities an issue?

So this young man who dropped them off? Cab driver was he? They were killed because they had NO money to give Tyson....I guess they were hoping to get free cocaine, and had a free ride from your friend.
An intensive police investigation established that they walked there....I guess your honest friend didn't go right to the cops the next day??

People did not resort to crime because they were poor and had no jobs. My grandmother grew up dirt poor - her family had no central heat, had to get water from an outside well and used an outhouse, but still - people weren't beaten for their wallets or shot and killed because they mistakenly wandered into that neighborhood. I guess back then even 'poor' people had moral values; they wouldn't use their poverty as an excuse to hurt others.

I lived in Bradenton for many years and never felt unsafe there or in Sarasota, except for certain areas, which everyone knew to avoid (except unfortunately, tourists). When I visit my family who still lives there, it is still that way.
