Let's hope that one is the one Irene decides she likes best. I'm really HOPING not to have to experience a "big one" my first year here. We are settled in so nicely.

Since we are "newbies" here, just when do you folks determine it's time to put those hurricane shutters up? Hubby has the screws in for the shutters so we are ready to put them up if need be but how do you determine if you should or shouldn't? I know watching the weather and watching the track but how bad does it have to be to need them?

I've always put up the shutters when we officially get a Hurricane Warning. By now you should have a basic hurricane kit ready (water, batteries, radio etc) and your important papers/documents packed and ready in the event you have to evacuate.
When you do put up the shutters, bring in your potted plants, lawn ornaments or anything else that the winds will pick up, too.

Thank you. We do have basically everything ready I guess, we have the water, radio and batteries. I will have to put together the important papers, thank you for the tip. Guess if we have to evacuate we'll just have to keep driving North, all the shelters say dogs only in a crate, our 95 pound golden doesn't have a crate and we aren't leaving him. Hopefully it won't be an issue but don't want to be the new STUPID kid on the block.

Latest Irene track predictions...all forecast models but one taking the worst away from us. Will hit DR as a low hurricane tomorrow, Cuba Tue/Wed, then we will know much more on Wednesday.

This does NOT look like evacuation plans are needed but a storm plan should be ready to be implemented if needed.

I won't evacuate unless it's a Cat 4 or 5. House is at 16' elevation above the canal and sea-level. House is made of concrete block and has the new roof. We'll be as safe here as any "shelter" within 100 miles of here.

still need to prepare a bit. while they forecast it to go up the east coast as a 1 or 2 it can still strenghten and hook across the state. they have been wrong before. we have only been here a year and a half so all we know is what we have seen on the news about hurricanes. first hand snow experience of going to bed with a dusting forecast only to wake up with multiple inches on the ground. then turn on the tv to see the weather people backpeddaling about how it was a tricky forecast. the only vocation to be wrong more than right and still keep their jobs.

Default think we are getting Irene

well Ct Sunday is forcasted for Irene, wind and rain, we have water, flashlights, all our papers, but here I dont think we evacuate
I worry more for my FIL who is almost 84, who lives in his own home with my BIL and SIL ,but cant really care for himself and these dopes leave him alone on the weekends and stay at there son's house
If they leave him alone this weekend,I swear Im gonna call the police, he doesnt deserve that~~~
I am more worried about the rain and wind .we have tree's everywhere and the rain could be torrential,OY!!!!!!
