I am looking for photography meet ups in Jan and Feb in the Sarasota area. I didn't get any hits when I googled it. We like to do field trips for wild life and city scenes. Any suggestions?

I know we have some wonderful photographers right here on City-Data-Col Deering, Old Man Winter, The Coach and several others.

If you're looking for a group to be involved with you might want to hook up with The Sarasota Photography Club. I know they have monthly meet ups: sarasota photography (Sarasota, FL) - Meetup

James Corwin also has photo outings when he's in town: James Corwin Johnson Photo Experience (Sarasota, FL) - Meetup

And O-Sea-D Aquatic Adventures has photo adventures via kayak: O-Sea-D Aquatic Adventures (Punta Gorda, FL) - Meetup

I belonged to the Sarasota On Assignment Meetup Group.
Went to a few Meetups with them, but they weren't very active. The one time many people did show up, there was no way to know who a group member was. I obtained a bunch of Meetup buttons from the Meetup people, offered them to members, but only had a couple of takers.

The group has recently gotten new management, but I don't think they're doing many Meetups, and those they do, in accordance with the Group policy, is more of a Photo Journalism event than one for the fun of just getting out & taking pictures.

I'll be back to SRQ next week until at least April, and looking forward to getting out & shooting wildlife, urban scenes, etc. and company is ALWAYS welcome! There are so many places to shoot that I haven't been yet.

Thank you for the lovely compliment SoFLGal!
Old Man Winter has retired from CD, but he still digs taking pictures.

OMW and I are always up for company on our photo outings. Maybe when Coach gets back in town, we could do our own little CD field trip for some fun wildlife photos. Anyone who enjoys photography on CD would be most welcome.

BTW...Myakka SP is hopping with wildlife at the moment.

If you go to meetup.com you'll find a handful of outfits tht meet in a regular basis. There's the Bradenton group that has outings quite frequently(at least twice a month); the Sarasota on Assignment is sporadic, but still has meetups mainly centered around photojournalism(mainly people events, not a bad thing); there's another one called Photography and Perception that meets every couple of weeks to discuss and critique their own photos. Usually there is an assignment and the photos should apply to the assignment.
there are others but they are more infrequent.
meetups are not usually arranged that far ahead of time, so you really won't get much of an advance notice. you need to be flexible.

A C-D Photo Meetup sounds like the way to go.
Myakka is usually a great place for photos (altho one time last winter went there & there was practically no wildlife to be seen that day).

I think it's too soon for Venice Rookery?

Places for a real quick place to take photos is Celery Fields or Quick Pointe or the place on Beneva but the name escapes me. What's good there is Dogs are allowed, too.

HOpe y'all had a great Thanksgiving!

Off to Doggie Park now, as there is actually decent weather up here in NY today (Temps in 50's).

Thanks for all the tips. We will check the meet-ups when we get to Sarasota. We belong to a photo club here in New Jersey so we might drop in on a Sarasota Photog Club meeting.
I just pulled out my South Florida Birding Trail Guide. We did some nice photography at the Red Bug Slough Preserve. You can get birds flying low over the water and a nice background. Looks like the babies won't be born yet in Jan at the Venice rookery.

My next question is about the best area to visit in the Everglades for photography. Are meet-ups useful there or should I look more for a guided tour geared for photography?

The Sarasota Camera Club meets in the Meadows Country Club, I believe 2 x month. They have several photo field trips planned for the near future. I can't seem to locate the calendar but I'm sure you can google it. I'd love to join a group of CDers once we get down in Dec. Can't wait to go to the Rookery and Celery Farm

I am in Sarasota now and have been to some great bird areas. How is the Venice rookery in the earlly morning for photos. We got great shots in the evening and would like to try it in the morning but are not sure if it would be as good as the evening. We have a 400 mm and a 500 mm lens.
