What I've found so far in my three short weeks of being a Sarasota resident is; The bike lanes! They are everywhere and I can ride my bike just about anywhere. If I can't ride my bike, I can strap it on the front of a SCAT Hybrid bus and go from there!

(I'm leaving out the weather, beaches, and water because that is too obvious)

1) Siesta Key Beach - To get a big healthy dose of Vitamin D along with Iodine from the Salty Air.
To get a cardiovascular workout -volleyball, frisbee, biking/jogging the beach.
In essence people living near the beach live longer.

2) Large bike-able neighborhoods and the Legacy Trail.

3) Not flood prone, as the surrounding communities are.

4) Best School in Florida is here - Pine View.

5) Best Investment in Florida.

6) Central location - many destinations north and south.

7) Heavy Art culture downtown.

8) Museums

9) Costco and Trader Joe

10) Lego man washing up on our beaches every now and then.

The culture is what separates it from the rest.

The beaches are great-but can be found in alot of places.

Thanks for all the great input, especially westpalmerranch. There's nothing like the insider's view from locals ... I think a trip is in order this spring. Sarasota sounds awesome, like a place you could really put down roots and raise a family.

Are there lots of retirees there? I'm looking for a place to live in my retirement years that is upscale but still affordable!
