Well I want to preface this by saying that while lately the Newton area has been rough - I moved to Sarasota from St. Louis, MO about 2 years ago and the perception I get is that overall Sarasota is a safe place. I don't feel scared or in danger in Sarasota. Every city has a bad neighborhood - and St. Louis certainly has a few too. Remember that the Brit tourist murders were the first homicides in all of Sarasota this year.

for an area generally known as a sleepy, retirement/tourist location i am really surprised how terrible the bad neighborhoods are.

The lack of jobs there probably contributes to the poverty and crime in that area. It's a sad situation and dangerous for tourists who may stumble into the area.

Sarasota has a high crime rate, there is no doubt.

I don't know what the "crime rate" actually is for Sarasota but, whatever the number, it is only a statistical calculation that *might* be useful for comparisons but really offers no qualitative value. The fact is that Sarasota (and environs) is a beautiful area with many, many qualitative pluses and very, very few qualitative minuses, and any other representation is simply inaccurate and misleading.

Besides, crime rates are meaningless to both victims and non-victims. The chances of being a victim are 100% for the victims and 0% for those who are not and that is true for every population around the world.

I know the guy who dropped them off in Newtown personally. They were looking to buy cocaine. They were told this was not a good idea, but insisted on trying to score coke in that neighborhood. You reap what you sow.
