I'll be coming from Baltimore and I've been all over the US. San Diego is great, but it's too pricey and the winters do get a little chilly. I've been to Tampa and Sarasota. Warm summers are no different then here in Baltimore. It actually gets over 100 degrees up here about 5-6 days a year. I LOVE those warm 70-80 nights and starting to really HATE the cold. It's like I lose half my life because of the cold and I'm tired of that. I'll also be honest. Baltimore is getting close to being the next Detroit and I'm looking to be around more white folks. I don't hate other ethnicity's, but I'm really starting to feel like a minority. It's uncomfortable. All I need is a nice little 1 bedroom apartment and a job. I'll bank 150K in profit when I sell my house and I own my car so I won't be coming down broke. Any general locations would be great.

1. I'm from Baltimore and no way is it as hot in the summer as it is here. Yes, it's muggy, but no, it's not as hot as you think.

2. In Baltimore, you feel like you are a minority because you ARE a minority.

Get used to the feeling, you'll be a minority everywhere in this country before long. Might as well learn to like it.

I'm early 40's SWM thinking of being a early snow bird and living in Sarasota in the winters. I live in Seattle currently and love it here about 7 months of the year but I'm looking to live in a warmer climate for 4-5 mos Nov-late March. I'm self-employed and can work from anywhere. Also looking at Hawaii, Arizona, Austin and San Diego as winter locales. Not to hijack the thread...but any thoughts on Sarasota as a winter location for a single early 40's male? Would it be prohibitively expensive to find a furnished rental during the high season? Would there be enough to do for fun?

Thanks!

Since I come from D.C. area I will tell you that you will not feel like a minority in North Port, Port Charlotte or Sarasota.

If you're moving into an apartment and not buying a house right away, just choose something close to work - (or play) to get a feel for the areas. Entry level housing is very inexpensive down here so with a decent down payment and credit history (along with a job), you would have no problems buying something decent.

I too will soon be an expatriate of the Washington, D.C. metro area for the Sarasota area because I am also exhausted from being a (white) minority. I am originally from the Midwest. I have researched the area, and my understanding is that Sarasota has become more of an area where Midwesterners feel comfortable.

For people who aren't familiar with the D.C. region, the buildings and the traffic and the people seem to trap the heat. I have been monitoring the humidity and temperatures in both D.C. and Sarasota, and they are practically identical.
