My daugnter is having a strange problem.....hundreds of ant-like insects with wings are congregating on the top of their pool screen. Some of them are so tiny that they fall through the screen into the pool. And they bite people who are in the pool. They kind-of look like tiny termites, but I never heard of termites biting people. Any ideas where they could be coming from and what they are?

possibly winged ants which might be called flying ants. they look a lot like termites but if you google they will explain the difference. they hatch this time of year in swarms.

They just moved into the house this week. They have checked carefully to,be sure the ants are not crawling up the house, or coming up the pool screen. They seem to be winged ants swarming. Mostly gone now.

I don't. And it's not a problem at all.

Had the same thing about a week ago. Swarmed for 2-3 days and now they are gone. The ones that came through the screen and into the pool were mostly dead.

We had them for three consecutive days last year, then again twice this March, and twice last week. When you hose the clumps off your screening, many of them drip right through.

Very few of them are alive. Most seem to be no-see-ums, with some ants that look like termites thrown in (these are usually the live ones). We've not had any biting insects.

When it happens, I hose off the screening, then sweep the lanai with the hose, skim the pool with a silt net (only silt nets are fine enough to get all the no-see-ums), and run the filter overnight.

Picture below. Oddly enough, of the 18 squares on the top of our lanai, these bugs are *always* on this particular square. Any ideas why that might be?

these swarms usually occur annually, when a nest hatches. Most likely you have a small opening/crevice in the metal rail near that square. Enough so the bugs lay eggs/nest within that small area. And when they hatch, they swarm in the area closest to the nest.
