It's a dough thing, definitely. That thin chewy/crunchy crust. Very few places get it right. Two of the places in Venice where we had pizza tasted like Pizza Hut garbage. Sorry, but that's NOT pizza, lol.

I'm only a snob about two things: pizza and bagels. Always separate.

@newtovenice: Can you recommend any good bagel shops in the area?

No, I do not know of any. If you have the Brooklyn Water Bagels chain near you, try those. I've lived in SoFL for many years and they are the closest to NY bagels I have found. Other chains are pretty gross, and the few mom and pop type stores I've encountered have had the huge roll-ish, white floury, Wonder Bread style bagels.

Can't remember the last time I had a bagel.

If you end up in or near Lakewood Ranch, check out Michelangelo's for pizza and other things. They are the closest thing to the real thing in LWR. Rico's at 70 and Lorraine is also not bad.

Lox and Eggs in southern Sarasota!

Great Bagels (and I know bagels).....

Ok, so to be truthful, they are about a 7.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. But that's quite good.....far better than anything else in the area and worth buying, eating and freezing.

As far as Pizza my quest goes on. There was actually a decent place but it closed (flatbreads on main in SRQ).

Some have suggested Goodfellas - I had a slice at a street fair and sorta liked it (garlicy, but good).

I'm one of those crazy people who won't eat regular pizza. It's got to be special...and that means almost nowhere I've found in Florida (I live in New England much of the year).

Philly native here and I can't find any bread OR pizza that I like, but anyway, my Italian friends here make the trip to Mazzaro's to stock up on their Italian staples.

There are a bunch of other threads on this forum about pizza, do a search and you should find them.

lately I've been enjoying the pizza and other italian dishes at a place called the Trattoria on Main Street Lakewood Ranch. Thin, crusty and tasty. Also their italian dishes are very similar to ones I had on my trip last year. No chicken Parmesan here. Great pasta

Grimaldis, original Brooklyn pizza is in Tampa, right near airport and in Ft. Meyers as well

Have any of you who want NY pizza tried this place? (On Downtown Main St. Sarasota)

Patellini's Pizza | New York Style Pizza

They used to be a delivery place near my house and I thought the pizzas were fantastic. Now they are a cool little restaurant downtown. But of course these things are subjective. If you haven't been there, it's worth a shot.
