This will be our first Christmas in SWF and I'm wondering what the consensus is on tipping people who regularly perform services for you such as the landscaper, pool guy, pest control, fertilizer company, trash collectors.

Any advice?

Advice? why would you tip a landscaper etc esp if you're in an HOA doing that if that's applicable?

Pool guy? trash guys?? are you serious. Don't you pay the pool guy anyway? Trash collectors are employees of the county or a private contractor, they aren't doing you any favors, it's their JOBS.

My advice is don't set some kind of precedent of this sort. It can be misconstrued by the recipients, but it's your money, feel free to spend it as you wish,

Where does it stop? why not tip the mailman too, the Amazon driver, the Fedex driver, the plumber, the carwash attendant.

You want to do the most good? donate your free cash to your Church, synagogue, temple, St Jude, JFS, The Salvation Army, Catholic Diosese, Habitat, Senior Services etc.

To each his own but I don't tip these workers, ever. Do what you wish.

^^^
Sorry my post angered you so much. For many people tipping is quite common at the holidays and I enjoy giving a little extra to the hardworking people who make our lives easier. Don't you at least tip your housekeeper or hairdresser at Christmas?

You have no clue about my charitable donations or what I do with my "free cash" - I never knew there was such a thing. Happy Holidays!

Glad to hear that Brad and ngd. Sometimes the holiday gratuities can make the difference in whether or not a small business can survive.

I'm a softie when it comes to young people working. Both of my kids worked in the restaurant business while going to school and boy is that a life lesson!

At Christmas we tip the trash-recycling-lawn waste pickup as well as our people who do our lawn maintenance. I know they really appreciate it.

Here's a tough one. Our veterinarian is fantastic and the vet techs who work in the office are so kind and loving to our dogs and I want to do something for them but it seems like their offices get inundated with sweets and other treats.

For the vet we had in Las Vegas, we sent a floral arrangement in the shape of a dog and during a very intense eye operation ordeal, we brought in a few bags of Starbucks drinks and pastries but that wasn't at Christmas time - it was just because of how over and above they had gone in treating our dog who was blind. Any suggestions for a professional office and their staff?

My wife would give her hairdresser $20 extra tip in December for a tip...and the nail lady too...$10.

We don't have lawn or pool people. No Dog. No cleaning people.

I can't recall Holiday tipping anyone, except my wife's hair dresser, and nail lady, and our cleaning lady & her staff when we had a much larger home up North.

I never even thought to tip the garbage people. I don't even know if they are same people each week, or not. I hardly ever see them.

If we frequented a particular restaurant/bar, we'd tip them extra for the holidays, but we don't have a favorite place yet.

Sorry, I'm not much help.

How do you tip the trash collectors? They are here for about 35 seconds. By the time we realized they were here they'd be gone before we made it outside.
