Gordon Food Service (GFS) has the same type of whole fillet that Costco has, and you don't need to be a member to shop at GFS. Half the price of Publix and same quality. GFS is on the Trail in Sarasota near the intersection with 72. Restaurants buy from GFS.

Wow, lots of suggestions both where to go and where to avoid. I hadn't even heard of Gordon Food Service.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to post!

I've never heard of GFS but will check them out, for sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

For butcher
Southern Steer-Bee Ridge
Express Meat market-Webber, next to The Parrott. Great Brazilian cuts of beef
Chop Shop-Bradenton/Manatee by the beach

Retail:

Gordon Food Service sells Two Rivers Reserve Tenderloin. Water, salt and beef fat are added to inferior cuts of meat to enhance their flavor. https://tworiversct.com/products/. https://gfsstore.com/products/771991/

Costco sells from Californian farmers, located in the San Joaquin Valley. They do not modify their tenderloin. You are not paying for water, salt or added fat. Their prime is really prime. Choice is first grade choice. All Costco beef suppliers are certified following the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s regulations for commercial sale.

I would urge you to try them both, and decide for yourself if the difference matters to you.

As noted above, same type as Costco - yes. Same quality, no. Does it matter, only you can decide that.

Publix will cut tenderloins to your preferred thickness for no extra charge. If you want them thick and those on the meat shelf aren't what you want, just ask the butcher to cut you some and you can give the requested thickness.

Sometimes Winn Dixie will run a great sale on whole tenderloin. That's the piece that's about the size and shape of a person's forearm.

And watch out for "WD Brand" ha ha....and the crap meat at Detwiler's....sure, you bet, it's prime and/or #1 USDA Choice, yeah right....I know better. They even buy "seconds" of vegetables out of a Miami jobber that Walmart or Publix corporate buyers wouldn't touch!
I buy steaks for all the time from Kansas City Steaks for family gifts since I live far way and have had nothing but praise. My dad in particular really liked them and he knows a good steak.
