So I have to get some filet mignon.

Who is your go to grocer for meat? Publix? Detweiler's? Aldis?

Suggestions please since it's not cheap. TIA.

Publix or Gordon Food Service( in Sarasota) for a larger chunk which needs to be cut (but you can choose the thickness of each piece which is nice). GFS is typically half the price of Publix. Both are good quality.

If you have the ambition, the cheapest and best way is to buy an uncleaned choice whole filet from either Costco or Sam's Club. The method of cleaning and cooking I have followed for years is by Alton Brown.

It will cost you about half of the price from a meat market, and you can freeze what you do not use. The meat is generally way superior to supermarket meat.

Has anyone tried Omaha Steaks? It's the company where you order online and they ship the order. I was thinking of trying it out so I was wondering if you were pleased with them.

I was very disappointed. If you are seeking Bern’s quality, this is not the way to go.

Back in the day Omaha was the mackdaddy of mailorder, not anymore...even Kansas City Steaks is better...locally I've found the place on 17th Street in SRQ decent, but Karl Ehmer's Alpine is good as well, so is Chop House in Manatee. Few people around here in business ever get #1 Prime..."Prime Grade", yes, but it ain't #1 Prime...hell, even Choice has different grades that most people don't know....lol....and many many stores sell crap Select Grade...and real fools think "Angus" is a Grade...lol...but these marketers sell it as something special..yeah right, it's a different type of COW, that's it, but fools pay a premium for "Black Angus" (which 6 times out of 10 you ain't gettin' Angus at all).

And watch out for "WD Brand" ha ha....and the crap meat at Detwiler's....sure, you bet, it's prime and/or #1 USDA Choice, yeah right....I know better. They even buy "seconds" of vegetables out of a Miami jobber that Walmart or Publix corporate buyers wouldn't touch!

Fresh Market used to have good filet. I don't live there now so haven't been in several years.

I have always had EXCELLENT steaks from Publix. The best, truth be told. Haven't bought any in quite a while. The worst and most expensive came from Whole Foods.

Gotta be an idiot to buy a steak from Whole Paycheck, I agree.

Back in the day, I bought all of my steaks cut on premises at Dan's Market on 15th/Manatee

I have to agree with the Costco suggestion above. Their meat quality is better than grocery stores nearby.
