What all types of jobs have you applied for or sought after and what county have you been looking in specifically?

Everyone I talk to says it's incredibly horrible...unimaginable really.

I check Craig's list occasionally for some part time work, I do see a few jobs here and there but they don't pay much. At least not enough to warrant me traveling up to Sarasota every day from down here.

I'm thinking of specializing in giving Cougars a massage! (I know I may be limiting my market opportunities a bit! But I believe in having a specific business plan!) I'm really cheap, and willing to work by the hour(s). Do you think IF I started a business I'd have a chance at having a chance, or a chance at having a chance at making it? Or, did I just repeat myself!?! I'm just trying to figure out my options, just in case I ever need to . . . Uhm . . . . work again. . . .

And, just wondering can people that own their own massage business drink beer when they are working? I know its tough out there, but I need to maintain certain benefits, IF I'm gonna seriously consider this!

Hi! I'm new to the forum although I've been a reader and a fan for awhile, from upstate NY. We are coming down in January to look around again for a home and jobs. Staying in Venice and wondering the best source for job postings in SW Florida. He's a pool master tech (10 yrs exp) and I'm currently working for an orthodontist as a treatment/marketing coordinator. We were coming with resumes and going to walk in to establishments that we were interested in. Hard to know where to look, not knowing where we'll settle - which comes first, the job or the home? Sounds like the job, from your postings.

HMM, isn't the show "Cougar Town" supposed to be based in your area?

Hi Sunseacher!
I'm from Western NY originally.
Jobs are tough. They install pools, pool decks and the lanai at prices starting at $ 19K. So, I don't think they pay well. And, there are lots of pool contractors around so the competition is tough. I can't help you with the orthodontist job opportunities.

You are going to love coming down in January!
Good Luck! And, Welcome to the board. There are lots of great posters here.

It is rough for sure. I'm very fortunate that I don't *need* to have a job, but something to do part time would be nice. I'm currently looking for some volunteer work instead.

BH- I think we need to see your business plan before we can give you the 'go ahead' on your current business idea. IMO, beer drinking is perfectly acceptable at any job.

When was the last time you were here & were you looking for employment then? Plan to rent first. You should be contacting as many orthodontic practices as you can prior to arrival; walking in with a resume off the street, unless you're wearing a giant tooth with a resume stuck in the retainer is not quite professional. If I were a master tech in pools, I would be contacting developments who have homes with pools empty in forclosure & offer a sweet price to keep the pools up until a sale occurs; HOA's hate all the green algee pools they now have to deal with when people ditch their homes.

Do your groundwork prior to arrival & get a feel for what's going on in this big 'ol swamp.
