Hi all,
First post here. I'm moving to Savannah this summer for a hospital job, and was hoping I could get some advice on where to live. I answered the suggested questions below:

1. Budget - would like to rent and would go up to $2k/month
2. House/Condo/Townhome? - open to anything, but I need a garage for my car; also would prefer a newer/renovated place
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home) - commute to hospital
4. Children(public school vs. private) - none
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two - preferably urban; I'm a single guy in his late 20's
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not? - not
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood. - younger
8. Renting or buying? - renting at first

I get a little alarmed by all of the robberies that seem to occur in the historic area, which is a shame since I'd ideally like to live there (if I can get a garage). Any suggestions appreciated, and living downtown is definitely not mandatory for me.

I am guessing that you will be at either Memorial or Candler/St Joseph. The only other hospital would be the St. Joseph that is w-a-a-ay out. If you will be out there, start looking in that area. Lots of small to large homes.

Now, if you are going to be at one of the other two hospitals, start looking for something south of Derenne Ave. Fairway Oaks or Kensington Park are the two nearest subdivisions that have homes with garages. I don't think that the apartments in the area have garages.

Renting first is a great idea. Get a feel for the area and then, when the right home goes on the market, you will be ready. The Historic District might suit you just fine, but the problem will be the garage. The City has several multi-storied parking garages in the HD.

Thanks. Memorial is where I'll be working.

There are several nice apartment / condo communities on Johnny Mercer Blvd that have garages but for $2000 month you might as well rent a house. And don't let fear of crime worry you. There is very little in the historic district anyway and what is here citywide is 90 percent black on black and drug-related.

Look in Ardsley or Kensington park. With any luck you can get a nice bungalow, that's a close drive to about everything. Your commute will be about 5 minutes.
