I recently moved down to savannah from nyc. My SO (significant other) is moving down in september to live with me. We both have wanderlust and do not care to stay in savannah for a long time so we do not plan on having a family here or any of that. I just want to ensure that she is happy here for the time we're here. I want to ensure she can find a job and make friends and be able to live a happy and productive life here like we did in nyc.

I already have a career here so this thread is mostly about her.

She bartends as a "day job" and she is a visual artist, career-wise. She is good at making friends and hustling a job, but when you move anywhere it takes time to establish a routine and community in a new city.

I just wanted to know if there are any bars and groups of people similar to those that would be found in the lower east side. I know scad has a ton of artsy liberals, but we are in our mid/late twenties and hanging out with a bunch of "kids" is something we do not have a lot of interest in.

How easy is it to find a job bartending in a "dive bar" in savannah or barista in a private coffee shop? Is there alot of opportunity for photographers to make a living here?

thanks for any help that can be given.

Not being New York, the dive bars here may be a little iffy for your SO. Plus she won't have a Southern accent, which might annoy certain people. I suggest that she try working downtown in a restaurant or place that gets a little more tourist traffic. Plus the tips will be better and the clientele more docile. Good bartenders can always find work.

There are dozens to maybe a hundred working artists here, not including SCAD students, with many photographers in the mix. Very few make a decent living from just their art. At least she will be able to attend gallery and museum events so she won't feel she's completely dropped off the face of the earth. She'll find the right crowd quickly enough.
