I got back last night from my trip to Savannah. It's amazing all the growth that is happening in Savannah. There were so many renovations and infill development going on. I checked out Broughton Street and even ran into Mr Ben Carter himself. I went to Leopold's on Saturday when they had their 95th anniversary celebration. I also went to Forsyth Park and enjoyed the farmers market they had set up. Also I couldn't believe had bad the traffic was in Savannah, have to say Savannah IMO has the worst traffic in Georgia outside of Metro Atlanta. GDOT needs to widen I-16 and 95. All in All I enjoyed my trip to Savannah and look forward to going back soon.

Awesome pics! You have a great eye for shooting not just the obvious, but the unusual. There's beauty even in some of the ugliness! Love the cat on the porch! LOL!

Did you speak with Ben Carter?

The building that the Ghost Hearse is parked in front of used to be a church; it is now very pricey loft apartments. A friend wintered in the middle one last year and had several big dinner parties. AWESOME place that's got to be seen to believed (the parties and the guests were pretty awesome too -- like something out of "Midnight in the Garden")

Great pics, but you should've posted them in the photo thread at the top so it doesn't get lost in the mix...

Gosh, I feel like a broken record. EVERYBODY forgets it is there. Ugh.

Thanks for all the comments! Newsboy, I didn't have a chance to talk to Mr Carter, he was on the phone. I hope to be coming back to Savannah soon.

Funny you should say that. Maybe it's just timing but I am always amazed that a city Savannah's size has so little traffic everytime I visit.

I once was stuck for a short time on I-16 but I usually don't see as bad a traffic in Savannah as what I often see in Valdosta or Albany.

Tallahassee which is about the same size as Savannah has way worse traffic than anything I've ever seen in Savannah almost every time I visit.

Like I said it could just be good timing the last four times I visited. I visited just a week before you and traffic seemed almost dead compared to what I'm used to seeing in most towns it's size. Although there were plenty of people walking around.

Wandering Import is right though, You really should repost those pictures to the photo thread. Savannah's photo thread is much smaller than alot of cities especially considering how beautiful and photogenic a place it is.

I plan on posting a load of pictures from my last two visits as soon as I finish uploading and organizing them in photobucket and flickr. Thought I had taken too many photos until I saw your huge collection LOL. Great pictures though.

Tomato, tamato .... but otherwise I think AFG's assessment of Savannah traffic is pretty accurate. Depending on the time of day and the part of town you're in, it's very bad -- especially during rush hours. I-16 and I-516 and their various exits and overpasses aren't just overcrowded, they're old and in bad shape. The entire Savannah freeway system needs to be redesigned and modernized from the ground up.

The Pooler and Effingham County exists off I-95 in West Chatham are very congested, with traffic backing up into the northbound travel lanes in the afternoons, but GDOT has long-range plans to address those issues. Also, you've got to figure in the truck traffic going to and from the port. Most people in town avoid Garden City and Port Wentworth if they can. The volume of tractor trailers is dangerous and scary. Again, there's a long-range plan to connect the ports directly from the main gate to I-16 via Jimmy DeLoach Parkway ... eventually. But for now, all those trucks (tens of thousands a day) are forced to travel on surface roads and highways to get to the interstates.

But the WORST traffic in all of the Savannah region is south of the city on Ga 204 / Abercorn Expressway, between Armstrong State University and I-95. It's awful, as bad as anything in Atlanta if stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper gridlock is your definition of bad. Traffic backs up for miles BOTH DIRECTIONS morning and evenings, every day of the week. Most folks who live here avoid it like the plague, but unfortunately there's tons of people who have no choice. Again, GDOT is working on -- they're adding an additional lane in each direction and creating a limited access flyover / exit for the Georgetown community, where thousands of people live. But it won't get better for another couple of years, at the earliest. And by then, the growth will probably make the improvements for naught.

The biggest problem with Savannah is the lack of a ring road, and the limitations on cross-county and cross-city connections created by both the water / marshes and Hunter AAF, which takes up a huge chunk of real estate smack in the middle of town. If there was a way to get from one end of the city to the other, or one side of the county to the other, without crossing Abercorn or having to go straight through downtown, we'd be in much better shape. But unfortunately, there is not. For all the hoopla about the completion of Truman Parkway, all it's really done is made the trip between downtown to the Southside quicker, and taken traffic off the surface streets on the east side of the city. It's done nothing to help people go east and west.

And just FYI: I live on Wilmington Island. My best friend and his wife live in Pooler. From my house to their house is about 23 miles. Getting there, with normal traffic, takes me about 35-40 minutes -- on a good day. I'd say that's pretty crazy commuting times for a city the size of Savannah, wouldn't you?

Traffic IS hit or miss. Lately it is more hit.

Last time I traveled to Savannah from Atlanta, I was fine until I got to 95 (on I-16). As soon as I passed under 95, traffic STOPPED. That day was pretty bad though. There was a multi vehicle accident on I-95 and authorities had some crazy idea to divert traffic on to 16 and exit on Dean Forest, which, of course stopped everything. The light at 16 and Dean Forest wasn't synched to deal with such a wave of traffic. Even beyond that clusterf***, 16 was still pretty jammed all the way to downtown. This was of course during rush hour. In addition, traffic going west was very slow going, too.

Truman at Victory is ALWAYS bad during rush hour.

I will say this though.. I have found myself creeping down Victory Drive (going east towards the T-bolt bridge) and thinking to myself, I remember a few years ago when I lived here, this kind of traffic would drive me NUTS, but after driving in Atlanta traffic, it's not so bad.

All relative I guess.
