This will be a huge boost for projects of this nature across the state...
Quote:
The Georgia Senate gave final passage Thursday night to legislation expanding a state tax credit to help developers restore historic buildings.
Senators voted 40-10 to increase what has been a limited credit of no more than $300,000 designed to incentivize the restoration of historic homes and “Main Street” stores to a credit that could go as high as $10 million per project. The larger credit is aimed at larger projects, including the plan to convert a century-old former Georgia Power Co. plant on Savannah’s River Street to a hotel that prompted the bill.

The governor signed the bill yesterday....

Developers who rehab historic property will now be able to claim more tax credits after Gov. Nathan Deal signed into law Tuesday legislation that was the Savannah City Council’s top goal.

House Bill 308 introduced by Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Savannah, and cosponsored by the local delegation, was designed to benefit Richard Kessler who is restoring a former Savannah Electric Power Co. generating plant on River Street and converting it into a luxury hotel. Kessler estimated hiring hundreds of workers, and civic leaders hope the project will spark additional economic development in the area.
