This project should help with the revitalization of the area...

The structure has been vacant since the former occupant, St. Paul’s Academy, shut down about a year ago. Lemon, however, can expect activity to pick up. The Savannah College of Art and Design now owns the property and is in the process of getting the necessary approvals to use the building for classrooms.

Lemon said she is all for the building being put to use again.

“They need to put something over there,” she said.

First, there is the matter of parking.

The former St. Paul’s building, located along 38th Street between Montgomery and Jefferson streets, was built in the early 1900s and lacks adequate parking for the 216 students and 12 faculty members the building is expected to serve.

To address the matter, SCAD intends to build a parking lot on grass-covered lots directly north of the building across 38th Street. The parking lot would provide 32 spaces in addition to about 24 on-site spaces planned for the rear of the building.

That is still short of the required 72 spaces, and the college will have to get a 16-space variance approved by the Savannah Zoning Board of Appeals.

The university is a good fit for the site because many students take the bus or ride their bikes to class, creating less demand for parking than other uses would, said local attorney Harold Yellin, who represents SCAD for the project.

What SCAD is doing is laudable. Consider the following maps though. They are locating in the middle both hot spots sw of Forsyth:
Savannah Aggravated Assault Hot Spot | savannahnow.com
Savannah Robbery Hot Spots | savannahnow.com

By revitalization what do you mean Airforce?

Savannahlife, I believe that by renovating this building, SCAD can help with the further growth of this area. SCAD has been a tremendous player in turning around other parts of the city and I know they can do the same for this area.
