Hi there,
I am 22 years old and a recent college graduate and just accepted a job in Hilton Head. I honestly am not all too familiar with the area and was wondering if anyone had any insight on places to live that are both affordable ( as I am in an entry level professional position) and also safe.

While I have been looking at living in Savannah, I am worried about traffic that comes with commuting.

Thank you all for any insight and advice!!

Youll have better luck in the South Carolina forum.

Not necessarily. There is no Hilton Head board in the South Carolina forum and besides, the OP asked specifically about living in Savannah and commuting.

TO THE OP: While there is some affordable housing on HHI most of it is in the form of rundown apartments or condo rentals. Most middle class people who work on the island live in Bluffton, which has tons of newer apartment complexes. Getting on and off HHI from Bluffton is much easier now with the completion of the Bluffton Parkway Connector.

Sad to report that commuting from Savannah to Hilton Head really isn't an option (it's about 45 minutes without traffic) but living in Bluffton will split the difference between the two so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

My daughter works on Hilton Head and is currently living in Pooler. She lived in Savannah for a few months but the traffic was brutal. Prior to that, she lived in Bluffton which is probably your best option.

Further to point about HH: For those in the lower paying jobs in the hospitality sector they live another one and half house further away from HH. A major report was published last summer in the Island Packet relating to a 4:30 AM bus for those workers to get to HH. Not easy, but HH has the work.

The original poster is inquiring about Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County do not have a sub-forum in the "South Carolina" forum; they are covered by the "South Carolina" forum.

If the original poster is inquiring about Savannah, the title of the thread should be renamed to be specific to Savannah.

I would advise seeking additional responses about the Town of Hilton Head Island and Beaufort County, South Carolina, in the "South Carolina" forum.

The Beaufort County, South Carolina, area is continuing to grow. Most growth is occurring in Bluffton.

you can't commute to HH from Sav unless you either have 3+ hours a day to enjoy car radio, or you own a boat and want to live on Tybee. Just saving you some time. Have you considered in Bluffton?
