I decided to create a thread for all news related to the new arena and the future Canal District. First up is news that the city has decided to move forward on the construction management contract with AECOM Hunt, despite the fact that their was some confusion regarding the contract...

Quote:
The Savannah City Council on Thursday awarded AECOM Hunt a $11.2 million construction management contract for the planned $140 million city arena after rejecting a competing company’s appeal of staff’s recommended contractor.

The 8-1 vote came after staff assured the mayor and aldermen that AECOM Hunt had followed the bid process correctly and that a confusing proposal document was to blame for the two other finalists calculating their fees differently than the recommended bidder.

My proposition...

I will cover drinks for the loyal posters of our Savannah forum if the cost of the arena somehow stays under $200 million.

Any takers?

If it goes over $200 million, you all cover my dinner & drinks downtown..

So this is like a 3 or 4 year bet? Cause it may take that long before we know

The city is getting ready to unveil three concept designs for the new Savannah Arena project.

The design contractor, Perkins + Will, gauged responses from online surveys and town hall meetings to create the concepts.

Two meetings will be held on Oct. 30 to discuss the Civic Center and the future arena designs.

At 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the Urban Land Institute will present a preliminary report of the highest and best use for the redevelopment of the Civic Center site. Urban Land Institute is a non-profit that provides research and advising services on real estate development and urban policy.

All this “planning” and “meetings” and “consultants” makes my head hurt. Just build the damn thing already!
