Of course you are going to have a lot of crime in a big city and sadly you expect to see it there. People visiting Savannah and those wanting to move here think it is a charming historic coastal town and that is what it should be.

The high crime isn't normal and you can't compare it to a large city.
if you say so. dont believe everything you read. if you live here then you would know. them tourist causes crime here

Alright, lets be logical. No, I honestly do not believe the "tourists" cause the crime here in Savannah.
Second, yes, it is wrong to compare Savannah with major metros like Atlanta, New York, Chicago, etc, however, I totally and COMPLETELY disagree when you tell me that Savannah is a SMALL TOWN.
Savannah, by far, isn't a huge city by any means and I run into people I know on quite a few occasions around town, but in a small town, it might take 10-15 minutes to drive through the whole area.
It takes me AT LEAST 25 minutes to drive from Wilmington Island to Pooler or from Southside to Port Wentworth and when you've got rush hour traffic, it might take you 15-20 minutes just to get from Oglethorpe Mall to Victory Drive!

No, Savannah is NO SMALL TOWN. I would consider our area a medium sized city. Our areas crime could be compared to places such as Charleston, Montgomery, or maybe even Jacksonville.. although Jax is pushing it just a bit.

I guess "small town" depends on where you come from. The Savannah Metropolian area is over 70 sq. miles. The population is around 300,000. The Inner city part of it where the biggest part of serious crime occurs is crowded, old, and just like the inner city part of New York, Chicago, Boston, or where ever.

The smaller towns surrounding the Savannah City limits, such as Garden City, Port Wentworth, Thunderbolt, are part of the Savannah area complex. The crime in these areas is also due a large part to the values of certain elements of the population, and in some respects, could easily be called "normal." Even small towns have Inner City problems. These small town abut the city. They have their own police departments and are not always the best. It's amazing that they do as well as they have.

Just a note to those unfamiliar with the way the area is laid out. These small towns, were a reasonable distance from Savannah Proper when they were started. Savannah has grown until it can't grow anymore in their direction. They can easily share the same city limits signs. It's impossible for the visitor to tell where one small town ends and Savannah starts.

I find it amusing when people start arguing about crime here. We do have a high crime rate. We've pretty much always had a high crime rate.

Many great people still live here. We all do what we can. There will be no quick fixes. Anyone who thinks they can do a better job with the situation is welcome to step up and start doing it.
