The public schools in the Savannah area are basically 100% black and are very poor performing schools. I would not send my kids there. It is not diverse and can be dangerous.

All the white kids all go to private schools or schools out in the suburbs - Pooler, Richmond Hill or Rincon.

Sadly when you look at the performance of the schools all you have to do is look at the ethnic make up of the school and that tells the story.
Wow, this is news to me. I've lived here all my life as have my kids and grandkids. None of us knew that ALL white kids go to private schools.

Did you know that some black kids go to the ALL white private schools? That's weird, isn't it.

Noone expects anything else from you but a sarcastic response. It is comical to get on here and read the way you respond to people so I do appreciate that.

You act like noone else is familiar with the school system. Have you checked the demograhics of the schools lately? I happen to have two young children in school so I know exactly what it is. The private schools are 99% white at least - FACT! The public schools are over 90% black in the city, closer to over 95% - FACT!

OK, lets here the next wise, smartalec response.

I agree that it is up to the PARENTS to invest in their children as this is the only way to gain success-since we all know that teachers are only capable of doing so much....
There are 2 public Montessori schools in the system

Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School
Charles Ellis Montessori Academy

Well, I guess I deserved that....but I have two daughters-in law that teach in the public school system. We keep up on what's going on in the system because we are interested in what they are doing. Some public schools are close to 90% black, but some public school have a good mix. Overall the ratio is about 70-50 with black being the majority in the CITY LIMITS. When you add on the newer schools out beyond the City Limits, the ratio begins to shift. That's why we have such a huge busing situation.

The BOE is constantly trying to get a 50-50 ratio, but that's going to be hard to to within the City. The population of all ethnic groups within the City Limits is minority white. therefore, it's not surprising that the older city schools are heavily black or Hispanic enrollment. Soooooo, do you bus the white kids in to even things out? Or do you let the white kids go to the nearest school?

So far, the most workable solution is to bus the black children out of the city into the more suburbian schools. And the whites, into the city. This isn't fair. Children should not have to spend so much time riding.. It's time wasted.

Appreciate the reasonable response.

That's why I said "city" schools. Not all public schools in Chatham County.

Have you seen the new discussion by the school board about redistricting to cut out the long rides? I think the best solution is to form small community neighborhood schools for all levels. The BIG schools system for middle and high school is a major problem.

It appears that CEMCS only accepts Pre-K and K and then you can ride the school through 5th grade. I don't think they have all grades established yet, being a new school. The school year that is currently halfway over is their first year and the charter students are all Pre-K and K. They won't have the older grades until those charter students get there. Charles Ellis, however, is a completely different story.

Default Magnet Schools

My son attended the public magnet schools, which are fantastic (in spite of the comments this post is sure to generate). When he graduated from The Savannah Arts Academy a few years ago he was Star Student of Chatham County. He also scored a perfect 1600 on his pre-SATs and the same on his SATs. The support and encouragement he received from the teachers and staff was phenomenal. My advice is simply to be selective on which of the magnets you apply for- some are admittedly better than others. He tried private school briefly when he was small, but the magnet schools were far better.

Good luck to you!
