Having a gun can make you be more aware. There are millions of people, as you well know, that have not been as fortunate as you are. I would hate to be unarmed with my children at home and the home invaders drop by. What would you do? Negotiate?

Honestly, I'm just not that fearful. I usually have a cell phone nearby and figure I could just jump out the window or leave through another door, if necessary.

In the past, all I've had to do was yell at someone and they've taken off running. I might be a big scary so and so. And, having dogs has usually kept casual visitors away.

Might be hard to get a family of 4 out the window in time. I'm not that fearful either but better safe than sorry IMO.

I hate to disagree with Ellie, but this is how I feel too.
A gun beats a dog anytime.
And I've always had both.

I think more of what I've noticed recently are the new folks carrying guns, legal concealed weapons, more than the moms and pops with a pistol in their bedside table.

I have pretty much owned a gun during all of my adult life and can carry concealed legally. I like guns and believe in gun ownership. Personally, I rarely carry a gun when I go into the city because I feel it is best to avoid dangerous situations than to rely on a gun to get you out of them. If I had to live in a community where I feared home invasion, I would arm myself in the home with a shotgun. If you do decide to own a firearm, I recommend enrolling in a firearms safety course.

There are many good streets that have updated houses and nice condos in the big victorian homes but one street over the bad elements remain. The area you are encouraging is still very much in walking distance for people that like to steal, rape, and assault among other things. The crime map that is put out every week is proof and cannot be disputed.

I am a Savannah resident that loves downtown and the area you are talking about. I am downtown all the time. But the facts are the facts. Check out the crime map.
The Part I crime rate in Savannah-Chatham has dropped by 13.5% over the past 10 years, 3.1% in the past five.

13.5% is a significant drop in crime. If you have lived here for 10 years you didn't need me to pull up this fact. It is very noticeable in everyday life in Savannah. I would argue that the largest decline in Crime is in the area between Forsyth Park and Victory Blvd. I don't know this for a fact because I didn't look it up, but I have noticed that this area has 'changed' the most in the past 10 years.

I love the downtown area, I am there all the time, but the facts are the facts, crime is way down over 10 years in Savannah.

I am sure most of you already have read this but for those of you who have not, this is pretty funny...And somewhat appropriate for this conversation.
I did not write this and I hope

Best of Craigslist(Savannah, GA)

To the Guy Who Mugged Me Downtown (Downtown, Savannah )

I was the white guy with the black Burberry jacket that you demanded I
hand over shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend.
You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I hope you
somehow come across this message. I'd like to apologize.

I didn't expect you to crap your pants when I drew my pistol after you
took my jacket. Truth is, I was wearing the jacket for a reason that
evening, and it wasn't that cold outside. You see, my girlfriend had
just bought me that Kimber 1911 .45 ACP pistol for Christmas, and we had
just picked up a shoulder holster for it that evening. Beautiful pistol,
eh? It's a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head, isn't it?

I know it probably wasn't a great deal of fun walking back to wherever
you'd come from with that brown sludge flopping about in your pants. I'm
sure it was even worse since you also ended up leaving your shoes,
cellphone, and wallet with me. I couldn't have you calling up any of
your buddies to come help you try to mug us again. I took the liberty of
calling your mother, or "Momma" as you had her listed in your cell, and
explaining to her your situation.
I also bought myself some gas on your card. I gave your shoes to one of
the homeless guys over by Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all of the cash
in your wallet, then I threw the wallet itself in a dumpster.

I called a bunch of phone sex numbers from your cell. They'll be on your
bill in case you'd like to know which ones. Alltel recently shut down
the line, and I've only had the phone for a little over a day now, so I
don't know what's going on with that. I hope they haven't permanently
cut off your service.
I was about to make some threatening phone calls to the DA's office with
it. Oh well.

So, about your pants. I know that I was a little rough on you when you
did this whole attempted mugging thing, so I'd like to make it up to
you. I'm sure you've already washed your pants, so I'd like to help you
out. I'd like to reimburse you for the detergent you used on the pants.
What brand did you use, and was it liquid or powder? I'd also like to
apologize for not killing you and instead making you walk back home
humiliated. I'm hoping that you'll reconsider your choice of path in
life. Next time you might not be so lucky. If you read this message,
email me and we'll do lunch and laundry. Peace!

Who needs a pea shooter when you have a healthy pair of choppers???

My First year in Savannah, I was working 3-11 at the Memorial Hiltion. It
was Christmas Eve, I had just gotten off work and headed across the street to get a brew and go hang out with my friend John. The first store
I went to was closed ( big suprise) so I got back in my car to head over
to revco. As I went to get into my car, an arm slid across the steering
wheel and instructed me to " slide on over or I'll shoot ya" Not seeing any
thing of the afore metioned weapon, I elected to bite him, very hard on
the hand. So of course he jumped out of the car nursing his newly inflicted wound. As soon as I got out, he tried to get back in the
car. But not quite so quick there pard. I tangled with him a bit. He knocked me down onto the pavement, then he seized his very skinny window
of oppurtunity to get the hell away from the skinny ,psycho, little
***** he elected to victimize. Still, he needed a little more job related
stress. I noticed the window was open on the drivers side, while he
was attempting his hasty depature, I stuck my arm thru the open window,
laid on the horn, and started caterwaling. At long last, he bid Adieu to the parking lot and the insane little *****. Unfortunatly my
purse was in the car and all the goodies that entails.

Of course I called the police etc, stayed at a friends house. A few days later , an elderly couple called and wondered if I had "lost any thing"
I indicated that I had, and would they please call SPD and let them know
where the had found the Item in question. Very soon thereafter the gallant boys in blue were calling and arraging a meeting place. Two
crusers escorted me into hitch village, I got into my car, which was undam
aged along with my purse and and related items. I drove out of hitch
village escorted by the same two cruisers and home again save and sound.

Sadly the perfortrator was never caught, We spread the word to the local ERs to be on the lookout for an infected human bite but nothing
materalized.
So, anyway thats my story.

blue called
