I saw a 3-D printer in person at the San Diego Supercomputer Center back in 2001. At the time, there were only a handful of 3-D printers in the entire world. It probably won't be too much longer before they'll be inexpensive enough for consumers to own one.

Ready to go out of the box, and at less than $3K, this one looks like it might just be the ticket:

I think this technology has great potential, although the true value will not be realized until the devices are capable of printing integrated circuits, LED's, and basic moving parts. That is still a ways in the future though, but it is fun to imagine.

The downside will be that in the meantime our houses will be filled with lots of plastic crap.

These things are pretty amazing. This is one case where it is not hyperbole to say that the applications for this technology is endless.

We used two of these in my previous job:

MAKE | Coraline 3D printing

They were pretty awesome to use.

Printing off the paper: Pushing the boundaries of the burgeoning technology of 3-D printing

They are going to be neat, but they will devastate the economy.

Can you have a capitalist society and 3d printers that can make anything? Would it have to go socialist?

They can't make devices. They can make sculptures of devices. You could use a 3-D printer to give you a carving in the exact shape of an iPad, but it would be no more functional than a block of wood.

IMO, capitalism has nothing to fear.

that is for right now

they say they are working on ones that can do that.

once it can make a circuit board, whats left?

and even if they never can make those, imagine what they could make

a new house. a car. a plane. weapons(even illegal ones). sex toys.

my god, what happens if all the adult toy stores go out of business?!?!?!
