I don't think the Mayan calendar says the world will actually end on Dec 21st but rather a new era will be ushered in. The world ending was Hollywood's take on it.
Either way, I don't think anything will happen but it will be interesting to watch the news on Dec 20th to see the possible hysteria.

i went to many parts of the bronx and asked people if they believed the world was going to end , most laughed and told me no , others said the world will end but not anytime soon , others told me to prepare. Im a catholic and i never heard anywhere that the world was going to end on a specific date .. science says the world will last like another 4 billion years.. we will all be dust ! LOL ..
it's a good idea to prepare for emergencies that's just common sense and basic survival as well as making life a little easier when we get sick or something else bad happens.
I think it mostly depends on what our individual interpretation of the "end of the world" means. For me it's like the whole world, the planet itself, is destroyed. I have a hard time conceiving of that when I see there are other planets in space that still exist without life existing on it. Our world I don't beleive will ever end. It is possible our life as we know it could end but all life?, all on the same day?. I don't believe it's possible to predict exactly when all life will end let alone when the world will.
I think the people hiding underground trying to create a new colony of people is just hysteria from hollywood, constant threats of going to war, threats of a nuclear war true or not, made up stories of scientists creating creatures with DNA from taking scripture way too literally, tsunami's reported that were not heard of before cable and the dish, and the economy. I'm sure there are a lot of other reasons I haven't listed.
I will not buy books on the end of the world, mayan calendar or that stupid bible code nonsense it is a waste of my money and time. No one knows when/if how the world will literally end or how/if the end of human/animal will come.
