A giant ice crack is forcing the evacuation of the Halley Antarctic research station

Of course the continent is moving and changing all the time, but it is a really thick ice sheet and they probably originally located it in a place where they thought was fairly safe from major cracks.

Being a cynical kind of person, I suspect there are "things going on" under the ice surface in Antarctica. These are probably making the ice unstable and causing these cracking problems. Chickens coming home to roost springs to mind.

They were already planning to move (and have mostly completed) the station due to an existing crack which has started to get larger but now with this new crack, they have to abandon the station completely for the winter.

If I was them, I would leave a small presence there (although the militarisation of Antarctica is not allowed) to stop any other country having a nose-around while there was no-one home.
